Peugeot Brings Electrification To South America With The Launch Of The e-208 GT In Brazil!

Electric Hatch Shows Electrification Agenda Is Moving To South America...

Peugeot launched its second-generation 208 to much success in Europe back in 2019. The hatchback went on to win several awards including the European Car Of The Year, one of the most coveted awards in the world. Last year, despite the ongoing pandemic, Peugeot released the 208 to the South American market. There the awards kept coming in by the 208 taking home the Best Compact Hatch by the UOL Carros Award and the Best Compact Car in the eleventh edition of CAR AWARDS BRASIL (a list which the Fiat Strada also made).

Now, to continue its successful trajectory, the Peugeot will begin to sell the electrified e-208 GT in the Brazilian marketplace. Fast, magnetic, and fun, the now 100% electric Peugeot 208, marks the brand’s plunge into a niche in which it already has great know-how and a wide presence in the European market.

The performance of the Peugeot e-208 GT delivers 260 Nm (192 ft.-lbs.) of immediate torque and 136 horsepower (100 kW), which allows the model to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h (62 mph) in just 8.3 seconds. There are three driving modes available, and the choice is up to whoever is behind the wheel, according to the need at the time. The “Eco” mode focuses on optimizing autonomy; on the other hand, “Drive” is indicated to ensure optimal comfort in day-to-day displacements, while “Sport” prioritizes performance, using maximum power and torque.

The joystick-styled shifter has five selection modes: P (Park), D (Drive), N (Neutral), R (Reverse), and B (Battery) Mode. The latter acts to ensure battery regeneration, optimizing the vehicle’s autonomy. The driver can choose between “moderate”, for sensations similar to those of a combustion vehicle, and “enhanced”, for a deceleration controlled by the accelerator pedal.

With 50 kWh of capacity, the Peugeot e-208 GT is capable of traveling up to 340 km (211 miles) with a full load (WLTP cycle). The vehicle can be charged in conventional residential type sockets or in quick chargers through a plug (present in the same fueling location as the combustion version).

The system consists of a Type 2 plug, for alternating current (AC), and a CCS-2 plug, for direct current (DC). Charging starts immediately after connecting the cable, and the user monitors the status from the recharge indicator lights (white = opening for plug connection; green: flashing = charging and steady = full charge; red = anomaly/problem in the recharge). To release the plug, simply unlock the vehicle doors.

The Peugeot e-208 GT can have 80% of the battery charged in less than 30 minutes if the user uses a 100 kW charging station (which, in practice, means recovering about 270 km (168 miles) of autonomy) – the data from the battery and electric powertrain usage and consumption are illustrated on the panel. The battery has an 8-year warranty, with a mileage limit of 160,000 km (or about 100,000 miles).

The Peugeot 208 marked the first hatchback on the CMP platform (Common Modular Platform), one of the most modern platforms from Stellantis. One of the characteristics of this platform is that it is multi-energy, that is, it can be optimized for thermal and electrical versions on the same production line. Thus, Peugeot is able to maintain exactly the same standard of equipment for the entire line, ensuring that every Peugeot 208 has the highest level of safety and driving assistance items, whatever its engine.

This means, for example, that even with a battery of 220 liters of density attached under the vehicle’s floor, the platform architecture of the e-208 GT allows:

– Maintain the same trunk volume as the combustion version (311 liters).

– Front and rear occupant spaces are identical to those of the combustion version.

– Excellent driving position and application of the most modern driving assistance technologies.

In order to run in complete safety in Brazil, the local Brand Engineering team applied a package of changes with specific reinforcements for our topographical, climatic, and, mainly, paving conditions. One of them is the battery protection package, with the application of metal sheets (instead of plastic) throughout the floor area and also in the area below the safe. The suspension trays of the e-208 GT gained reinforcements, as well as the tires, which are of the run-flat type.

Impressive car - nice job Peugeot!

Which one of the North American brands could offer something like this here? I'm hoping for importation of the new Fiat 500e and a battery electric C-segment hatchback for North America. I don't know what the production Centoventi will be, it could very well not be palatable for American tastes, just as the Fiat 500L was.

In the impressive spectrum of new product under the Stellantis umbrella there must be some platform, some architecture that can underpin a new Chrysler or two. How about a hint on that for those hungry for something. It is understood that these products have been in development for years, but a hint, please. Imagine the day when the Chrysler brand announces a half dozen new and refreshed vehicles and the uproar of joy and pent up expectation that will happen. Tommorow would work for me.
