We Went To Stellantis Cars + Coffee This Past Weekend

Design Team Holds Its First Car Event Of The Year...

The Stellantis (FCA US) Product Design Officer (PDO) team hosted its first cars and coffee event of 2024, this past weekend. Car enthusiasts from all walks of life, regardless of their favorite brand, descended upon the former site of the Walter P. Chrysler Museum for a morning filled with automotive splendor.

The turnout was nothing short of impressive, with a few hundred Mopar and non-Mopar vehicles filing the lot at the former museum to be part of the action. So much so, that some visitors had to utilize overfill lots across the street to accommodate the influx of cars.

These events, which occur a couple of times annually, have become a cornerstone of the automotive calendar in the Metro Detroit area, offering enthusiasts a unique opportunity to mingle with their favorite PDO designers. Enthusiasts also got a chance to get up close and personal with the latest concept car from the design team, with the spotlight this time falling on the Chrysler Halcyon Concept.

The Halcyon Concept, making its debut during an online presentation before its only other public appearance at the Amelia Concours d’Elegance in Florida, caught a lot of attention from those in attendance. While it looks much better in person, its futuristic design language is far from what Chrysler fans are used to.

The PDO staff were out in full force, engaging with attendees, fielding questions about the Halcyon on display, and proudly showcasing their rides. The atmosphere was further electrified by the beats of DJ Welchi, ensuring that the event was not just a feast for the eyes but a treat for the ears as well.

What truly made this event special was its ability to draw enthusiasts from far and wide. Attendees flocked from all corners of Michigan, with some even making the journey from neighboring states and across the border from Ontario, Canada.

Little, if anything of the Halcyon will make it to production, it’s significance is to telegraph to the world that the Chrysler brand is not totally lost and some talent exists and this concept at least conveys hope. Sure the Airflow was more production ready, but it communicated not hope, but a glaring demonstration that Chrysler was lost in the woods, relying on cookie cutter styling themes from the boredom of the cookie cutter universe and the Airflow was not and could not be the styling theme to lead Chrysler into the future. Indeed, the Halcyon has even less thematic definition and distinction, but it does step out of the cookie cutter box. Let’s lock these guys in a room filled with old Chrysler classics for a week.
Chrysler, though touting classic Chrysler inspiration and respect, so far, has done a miserable job of capturing either. Glad to see a change in leadership at Chrysler, smart move. Truth be told, the design theme for Chrysler, so far, has escaped definition or heritage, a key to any brand, as it seems to be just lost in a design studio that lacks inspiration and understanding of what Chrysler was, should be and can be going forward. Lock them up with those Chrysler of legacy quality.
Seems the brand needs a dose of inspiration, imagination and some good old “Chrysler” to relaunch the brand. So much to inspire, so important the task.

YUCK! someone had the sense to say NADA! Nope! go back to the design offices! Ralph Gilles once said Upper management likes to Micromanage design sometimes -( Dodge-caliber) forced on the Design team! by Benz management! lets hope the Leaders Of Chrysler Let it be what it should be Affordable Luxury! BOLD and Elegant at a Lower Cost to steal sales from Lincoln, Caddy, and ETC! and Keep it's own against Upscale Buick! SAD TIMES FOR ME Guess I will Hold On to My 300C Platinum for a while!!!!!!!
