FIAT has released its official sales numbers for the country of Brazil and they might surprise you. While the Italian marque only has one vehicle in its showrooms in the United States and Canada, its Brazilian operations are expanding and dominating the Brazilian marketplace. At the end of December, the brand led the Brazilian market for the 12th consecutive month selling 430,938 units (about 125,000 more units than the second-place automaker) in total for 2021.
FIAT Brazil’s numbers are impressive and make up 21.7% of the industry’s market share in Brazil. That is a growth of 5.2% over the year it had in 2020.
Leading the way for the brand, was the Fiat Strada subcompact pickup. The Italian marque sold 109,110 units of the Strada dominating 79% of the segment’s market share and became the best-selling vehicle in Brazil. It marked the first time that a pickup had taken the title.
If that wasn’t exciting enough, the FIAT brand ended 2021 with four models in the top-10 best-selling vehicles in the country. The Fiat Argo ranked 3rd with 84,656 units sold (the hatchback’s best performance since its launch in 2017), followed by the updated Toro compact pickup in 7th place with 79,914 units sold. The Fiat Mobi city car also hit the chart in the 9th spot with 65,855 units sold in 2021.
With the success of Strada and Toro, the FIAT brand was responsible for selling more than half of all pickup trucks in Brazil with 50.2% of the market share. The brand also controlled 30.9% of the hatchback segment, a position the brand hadn’t held since 2014, and the van category was no different with FIAT reaching 41.6% of the market share for the segment.
For 2022, the FIAT brand looks for even more growth in the market. With the launches of new vehicles like the all-electric 500e, the new commercial Fiorino vehicle, and its new Pulse compact SUV, the FIAT brand looks to continue to dominate the Brazilian marketplace. FIAT is even launching a new 7-speed continuous variant transmission (CVT) for its Strada lineup, the first time the Strada nameplate has ever been equipped with an automatic transmission. That CVT transmission option has already gained over 9,000 pre-orders after it was announced.
“In addition to having a full year in the commercialization of the vehicles we have launched, we will have very important news in the Argo and Cronos range, we will present the second SUV in our portfolio, we have surprises for the light commercial line and another new model that promises to accelerate the hearts of Brazilian consumers”, says Herlander Zola, FIAT director for South America and Commercial Operations Brazil.
