Mark Pawuk Wins At First NHRA Factory Stock Showdown Event In 2024

A Heartfelt Tribute To NHRA Legend Don Schumacher...

Veteran racer and team owner Mark Pawuk stole the spotlight at the 55th Annual NHRA Gatornationals, clinching victory in the Flexjet Factory Stock Showdown Series with a stirring performance behind the wheel of his Empaco Dodge Challenger Drag Pak. Pawuk’s win wasn’t just about crossing the finish line first; it was a heartfelt tribute to his late friend and NHRA Hall of Famer, Don Schumacher.

“I’ve always wanted to win the Gatornationals. This has always been one of my most favorite races,” said Pawuk, his voice filled with emotion as he spoke about his triumph. “To do it with my wife and daughter here and all the people helping me, it’s just so cool.”

Pawuk’s Dodge Challenger Drag Pak wasn’t just a race car; it was a canvas for honoring Schumacher’s memory. Adorned with a special memorial, the car served as a poignant reminder of the bond between Pawuk and Schumacher.

“Don and I were very close, and I reached out to his stepdaughter Megan and asked if I could do a car in his memory,” Pawuk explained. “We are going to celebrate him at a couple of races, and it’s just so cool.”

Throughout the event, Pawuk faced tough competition, particularly from Chevrolet COPO Camaro rivals. However, with skillful driving and a finely-tuned machine, Pawuk conquered each round, culminating in a final showdown against Stephen Bell.

“I drove good all day,” Pawuk remarked, reflecting on his performance. “I think they did a great job of standardizing everything and getting us all so we can be competitive again.”

Pawuk’s victory wasn’t just a personal achievement; it was a testament to the dedication of his team and the support of his sponsors. With gratitude, Pawuk extended thanks to everyone who contributed to his success, acknowledging their role in his journey to the winner’s circle.

“Everybody worked really hard on this program this winter,” Pawuk acknowledged. “I am driving better than I have in a few years. Hopefully, I can keep that up.”

As Pawuk crossed the finish line in the final round, his victory wasn’t just about claiming another trophy; it was a moment of triumph, a fitting tribute to a racing legend, and a celebration of camaraderie and perseverance in the face of adversity.

Mark never mentioned Dodge in his remarks, guess they are not supporting these Challengers. Knew that the Hurricane had no chance and the reliance of the Mopar teams on the old Hemi, just made Dodge walk away. Guess the next generation Charger coupes will need to put Hemis in them or it’s goodbye Dodge in the NHRA factory stock racing. Sad is it not?
