Ram 1500 REV’s 229 kWh Battery Could Cost $25K To Replace
Visual Capitalist Says It Will Cost Four-Times More Than A Volkswagen ID.4 Battery Pack...
In the fast-evolving landscape of electric vehicles (EVs), the 2025 Ram 1500 REV stands as a true powerhouse, boasting a colossal 229 kilowatt-hour (kWh) Nickel Cobalt Manganese (NCM) battery pack manufactured by LG Energy Solutions. However, as impressive as this technological feat may be, a pertinent question looms—what will it cost to replace such a mammoth battery pack?
The 2025 Ram 1500 REV will offer customers two options—a standard 168kWh battery pack with a targeted range of up to 350 miles, and an optional 229kWh large battery pack with an unprecedented targeted range of up to 500 miles. Both options can add up to 110 miles of range in just 10 minutes with 800-volt DC fast charging at up to 350 kW, promising customers rapid and convenient charging solutions.
According to data sourced from Visual Capitalist, the components alone for replacing the 2025 Ram 1500 REV’s top-tier battery pack could exceed a staggering $25,000.
However, beyond the awe of these mind-blowing specifications lies a critical discussion—when does EV battery capacity become wasteful regarding the materials used to construct a single vehicle? The Ram 1500 REV, with its 229kWh battery, encapsulates this debate. This battery behemoth is equivalent to almost four Volkswagen ID.4 batteries (62kWh) in a single vehicle, igniting conversations about the environmental footprint of such colossal power packs.
With its NCM chemistry, the Ram 1500 REV’s battery balances the premium Nickel Cobalt Aluminum (NCA) and the more affordable Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) cells in terms of cost per kWh. This choice of chemistry positions the Ram REV’s battery in the middle ground, offering a blend of efficiency and affordability.
The transition to an electrified platform for a pickup truck like the Ram 1500 REV presents substantial engineering hurdles. Competitors like Ford’s F-150 Lightning have grappled with towing ranges, underscoring the challenges inherent in electrifying the traditional capabilities of a pickup. However, the Ram 1500 REV has claimed the best-in-class total payload rating for an EV pickup, boasting an impressive 14,000 lb. capacity.
As battery chemistry advances and the incorporation of lightweight composites becomes more prevalent, electric pickup trucks are poised to benefit from enhanced performance and efficiency. Yet, in the current landscape, the reputation of EVs as potentially wasteful persists, particularly when it comes to power-packed behemoths like the Ram 1500 REV.
