Big changes are coming for the Jeep® brand’s hybrid lineup for 2026. According to our sources, both the 2026 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (JL) and new Gladiator (JT) 4xe models will be equipped with ZF’s state-of-the-art 8HP80PH plug-in hybrid (PHEV) 8-speed automatic transmission. This advanced gearbox promises major improvements in power, efficiency, and electric-only driving capability over the current ZF 8HP75PH transmission currently offered on the Wrangler 4xe.
Power and Performance Upgrades –

The 8HP80PH transmission is capable of a peak power output of 215 horsepower (160 kW) and 332 lb-ft (450 N•m) of torque from its electric motor. That is a huge improvement over the 134 horsepower (100 kW) and 181 lb-ft (245 N•m) from the current 8HP75PH unit. This results in quicker acceleration, seamless gear changes, and enhanced off-road performance — all while boosting fuel efficiency.
A standout feature of the ZF 8HP80PH is its high level of integration and modular design. Unlike older hybrid systems that house separate electronic control units, this transmission fully incorporates the motor’s electronic control into the transmission housing. This innovation reduces wiring complexity, improves safety, simplifies assembly, and cuts maintenance costs.
Next-Generation Electric Motor –

The transmission also benefits from ZF’s next-generation high-voltage electric motor, which uses welded copper rods instead of traditional coiled copper wire. This design increases the copper filling rate, leading to greater power density without expanding the transmission’s size.
Enhanced Hydraulic Control System –
An upgraded hydraulic control system further enhances efficiency. By using direct shift valves, the new small-volume hydraulic unit reduces the required hydraulic fluid from 3.1 liters to just 1.8 liters. This minimizes drag loss and optimizes system performance.
Innovative Power Shunt Pump System –
Moreover, the 8HP80PH introduces a single power shunt pump system that replaces the traditional dual-pump setup. When the internal combustion engine is off, a small electric motor drives the oil pump, maintaining hydraulic pressure and ensuring smooth operation across various driving conditions.
Electric-Only Capabilities –

The ZF 8HP80PH transmission also offers impressive electric-only capabilities. The 2026 Jeep 4xe models equipped with this transmission are expected to deliver up to 50 km (31 miles) of electric-only range and achieve speeds of up to 120 km/h (74.5 mph) without engaging the gas engine. This may different with the more off-road-oriented Wrangler and Gladiator, but the possibility is there. This allows for quiet, emissions-free driving on shorter commutes while preserving Jeep’s renowned off-road capability.
As Jeep continues to lead the charge in hybrid technology, the introduction of the ZF 8HP80PH transmission marks a crucial step forward. Our sources indicate that the updated 2026 Jeep Wrangler 4xe is expected to start production in Q4 2025, while the Gladiator 4xe will debut in Q1 2026. Both models will be produced at the Toledo Assembly Complex in Toledo, Ohio.
