2023 Jeep® Grand Cherokee & Grand Cherokee L Get TOP SAFETY PICK+ Rating

Recorded Highest Possible Ratings In IIHS Tests Required For TOP SAFETY PICK+...

In a recent announcement, Jeep® proudly shared that both the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WL74) and the three-row Jeep Grand Cherokee L (WL75) have achieved the prestigious TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This esteemed rating is the highest recognition granted by the IIHS, underlining the vehicles’ commitment to safety. This accolade applies to 2023 Grand Cherokee SUVs manufactured after March and 2023 Grand Cherokee L SUVs produced after May.

Jim Morrison, Senior Vice President and Head of Jeep Brand North America expressed the brand’s enthusiasm about this accomplishment: “Achieving the highest possible safety rating from the IIHS is consistent with the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s place as the most awarded SUV in history. The Jeep Grand Cherokee’s singular blend of safety technology and extreme-condition 4×4 capability affords our customers the level of driving confidence they deserve. And with the appeal of two- and three-row versions, that driving confidence is available to a wider customer demographic.”

The 2023 Grand Cherokee models excelled in the four crashworthiness tests required by the IIHS for the TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation:

  • Small overlap front – driver-side
  • Small overlap front – passenger-side
  • Moderate overlap front – original test
  • Side impact – updated test

A key highlight of the 2023 Grand Cherokee lineup is the standard-equipment Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) technology, referred to as Full-Speed Collision Warning with Active Braking and Pedestrian/Cyclist Detection. This advanced system employs an array of cameras and sensors to ensure both daytime and nighttime functionality. If a potential frontal collision with a pedestrian or cyclist is detected and the driver does not respond, the system will initiate the vehicle’s brakes, potentially bringing it to a stop. The system earned an “advanced” rating in daytime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations and a “superior” rating in nighttime conditions.

To achieve the TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating, the vehicles must also perform well in IIHS lighting evaluations. The 2023 Grand Cherokee lineup features Premium LED reflective headlamp configurations that received an “acceptable” rating and improved to “good” with high-beam assist.

Furthermore, the Grand Cherokee lineup offers customers access to over 110 safety and security features, including Intersection Collision Assist and Drowsy Driver Detection. The former helps detect vehicles approaching from both left and right at crossroads, providing alerts and automatic brake activation if a collision is imminent. On the other hand, Drowsy Driver Detection identifies signs of driver fatigue, such as lane deviation, and alerts the driver through audio and visual cues to pull over when necessary.

Morrison emphasized Jeep’s commitment to continuous improvement: “At Jeep, we are not content to rest on our laurels as the pre-eminent SUV brand. Whenever possible, we seek to leverage advanced technology to enhance our customers’ ownership experience.”

It’s important to note that the TOP SAFETY PICK+ award is the higher of the two awards presented by the IIHS. To qualify in 2023, a vehicle must attain good ratings in various crash tests, offer acceptable or good headlights across all trims, and provide a front crash prevention system with advanced or superior ratings in both daytime and nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations.

Both the two-row Grand Cherokee and the three-row Grand Cherokee L meet these stringent requirements. Jeep made structural modifications to the vehicles’ undercarriages in March and May 2023 to ensure their performance in crash tests and safety evaluations.

In January, prior to these modifications, Jeep adjusted the aim of the headlights across all trims. This adjustment resulted in the LED reflectors on certain trims earning a good rating, while those on other trims received an acceptable rating. The adjustments were prompted by poor ratings for headlight glare and performance in earlier evaluations.

Overall, Jeep’s 2023 Grand Cherokee lineup showcases the brand’s dedication to advancing safety technology and enhancing the driving experience for its customers. The TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the IIHS is a testament to Jeep’s ongoing commitment to safety excellence.
