Earlier this year, the Jeep® brand showed the public it’s upcoming electrified offerings of the Jeep Renegade and Jeep Compass at the Geneva International Motor Show. Now, the brand is ready to show the world its new plug-in hybrid offerings in the real world.
Both the Jeep Renegade PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle) and Compass PHEV will be on hand for the Salone dell’Auto (Turin Auto Show) in Turin, Italy. The event will mark the first on-road appearance of the Renegade PHEV. The plug-in hybrid Renegade will set off from Piazza Vittorio Veneto and parade around the city center, giving the public a chance to discover the new Renegade PHEV’s quietness and efficiency.
The Jeep Renegade PHEV and Compass PHEV will be extremely respectful of their environment, with CO2 emissions lower than 50g/km, and fun to drive courtesy of fast engine response and smooth acceleration. Both vehicles are fitted with plug-in hybrid propulsion systems, and batteries which can be recharged by the internal combustion engine or from an external power outlet and, as a consequence, can store an impressive amount of electric energy. This gives both vehicles a range of approximately 50 kilometers (31 miles). The system also will allow both vehicles to achieve a full electric top speed of 130 km/h (81 mph).
The new electric motor system works in synergy with the all-new 1.3-liter turbocharged inline-four cylinder engine, that made its debut late last year in the 2019 Jeep Renegade lineup. The 180 horsepower 1.3-liter turbocharged engine combined with the electric propulsion system, produces up to a combined 240 horsepower.
But the system is not only about efficiency, the new electric all-wheel-drive technology (eAWD) adds even more capability to the Renegade and Compass. The high torque ensured by the electric motors allows the ability to adjust torque with extreme precision during take-off and driving on challenging terrain with a very low transmission ratio. The traction to the rear axle is not provided by a prop shaft but through a dedicated electric motor. This allows the two axles to be separated and to control the torque independently in a more effective way than a mechanical system.
The Renegade PHEV will make its on-road public debut at the Parco del Valentino park in Turin, on Wednesday, June 19th at 8:00 pm CEST. While the Renegade PHEV might be getting all the attention, the Compass PHEV will be on hand at the Jeep stand during the event.
