SOLD: Rare Limelight Green 1970 Plymouth Superbird Takes In Over $740K

HEMI-Powered Superbird Brings In Big Bucks At Mecum Kissimmee Event...

There were a number of winged Mopars that crossed the auction block at the Mecum Kissimmee event. One of them was the gorgeous 1970 Plymouth Superbird painted in the stunning Limelight Green (FJ5) paint.

Of the 1,920 units produced in a single-year production run, only 135 were produced with the 7.0-liter (426 cubic-inch) HEMI V8. This particular car isn’t just equipped with a HEMI, but it is one of 58 units produced with the A833 4-speed manual transmission.

hat 426 HEMI features two Carter AFB 4-barrels, large-port hemispherical heads, high-flow exhaust manifolds with H-pipe exhaust, a NASCAR-developed reciprocating assembly, and performance ignition were all standard equipment on this engine. Being a HEMI car and mated to the A833 4-speed manual, the car was automatically equipped with the A33 Track Pak package with its Dana 60 Sure-Grip differential, and 3.54:1 final gearing. It also meant it came with power steering, power brakes with front discs, and heavy-duty cooling equipment, as well.

Inside, the car is equipped with Black bucket seats with a center fold-down buddy seat, an AM radio with an 8-track player, the Tic-Toc-Tach, and a Hurst Pistol Grip shifter.

Of course, what sets the Superbird apart from the standard Road Runner is its steel rear window, standard black vinyl top, “towel rack” rear wing, fiberglass nose cone, and front fender scoops. The hood uses functional hood pins to help hold it down, while large “Plymouth” fender decals and Road Runner trim accents, and chrome exhaust tips help tell you this isn’t your ordinary Road Runner (as if the wing and the nose cone weren’t enough).

Mecum had estimated that the car would pull in around $750,000, however, after the gavel fell the bidding stopped at $650,000. After fees, it pushed the final total to $742,500.
