2023 Jeep® Cherokee (KL) Gets Ready To Sail Off Into The Sunset After February

Only Two Models Are Available For 2023...

Scheduled to end production on Tuesday, February 28th, 2023, the Jeep® Cherokee (KL) enters 2023 with a simplified lineup. But with that simplified lineup, comes a number of important option changes. So let’s take one last in-depth look at what was once an integral part of the brand’s growth over the past decade.

2023 Jeep® Cherokee Altitude LUX 4×4 in Sting-Gray. (Greenway Auto Group).

For 2023, Jeep has ditched the Latitude LUX 4×2, Cherokee X 4×4, and Limited 4×4 models in favor of just two trims.

The entry-level is now made up of the new Altitude LUX 4×4, which adds the popular dark appearance package and four-wheel drive as standard equipment. Other standard features for 2023 include:

  • 2.4-liter TIGERSHARK inline-four cylinder (184 horsepower and 171 lb.-ft. of torque)
  • 9-Speed 948TE Automatic Transmission
  • Gloss Black Accents –
    • Jeep & 4×4 Badges
    • Unique Cherokee Badge (Matte Black with Gloss Black Tracer)

Jeep says that they expect 83% of the limited production run to be made up of the Altitude LUX 4×4.

For the second model, Jeep will continue to produce the off-road-oriented Cherokee Trailhawk. Thanks to a more aggressive look and stance, it exemplifies the Cherokee’s trail readiness. Loaded with off-road hardware, the Trailhawk includes aggressive approach and departure angles thanks to unique front and rear fascias, an 1-inch factory life, Jeep Active Drive Lock locking rear differential, skid plates, and those signature red tow hooks. The locking rear differential is selectable in any low-range terrain mode to maximize tractive effort at the tire patch that can support it.

Ending current production does NOT mean Jeep will be abandoning this market segment, one in which historically the current Cherokee has flourished, but simply means a replacement and its manufacturing facility is still under development. The outgoing Cherokee, of which I have owned two over seven years, is a reliable, competent and satisfying SUV, which truthfully and candidly has a few drawbacks that a new generation mid-size Jeep could remedy.
I venture to predict the solution and projected resolutions. The next Cherokee will share a platform and manufacturing facility with the upcoming Wagoner S all electric Jeep. This resolves the minor issues I have with my Cherokee experience, a tad too narrow, a tad too short and not capable enough to match Grand Cherokee levels in demanding uses.Wider, longer, rear wheel and all wheel drive driven and based on the new STLA Large platform, clearly much more capable with a “feel” Jeep owners demand. This next generation Cherokee, unlike its Wagoner S sibling, will offer a four cylinder turbo engine at entry level, moving to Hurricane six power and a possible hybrid six offered in a high level model, perhaps the Overland.
There is no way Jeep abandons the segment, or the well received and popular Cherokee model especially since its replacement foundation building block has already been announced, shown and is close to production.

No, new Cherokee is due out in 2025 and should be built in Mexico. According to some of the Chrysler employees who posted stuff on their LinkedIn page it will have an HEV and is codenamed KM.
