The Reason Why Ram Created The New Hybrid 2025 Ramcharger

Stellantis Engineer Explains What Crucial Test, Played An Important Role In The Truck's Development...

Ram might be arriving late to the electric pickup scene, but it’s bringing some innovative features to the table. The 2025 Ram 1500 REV offers two all-electric options: a standard 168-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery pack with a range of up to 350 miles and an optional 229-kWh large battery pack with an impressive range of up to 500 miles. However, concerns about range anxiety during long trips, towing, or finding charging stations in less populated areas persist. Yet, Ram has a solution.

The all-new 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger is debuting with a class-defying targeted range of up to 690 miles, setting a new benchmark. The Ramcharger, with its exceptional range, joins the lineup as an example of Ram’s commitment to offering cutting-edge technology in both gas and electric vehicles.

The 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger introduces groundbreaking performance with a liquid-cooled 92 kWh battery pack and a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine serving as an onboard 130 kW generator. This power combination feeds a 250-kW front and 238-kW rear Electric Drive Modules (EDMs), providing all-wheel-drive capability. The front EDM includes an automatic wheel-end disconnect for optimal efficiency, while the rear axle features an available electronic-locking rear differential.

The power sequence starts with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine, driving the onboard 130-kW generator. The engine generates mechanical power, which the generator converts into electrical power. This electrical power serves multiple purposes: recharging the battery when depleted, preserving battery power, or supplementing the EDMs with combined electrical and battery power for maximum wheel performance. Notably, there’s no direct mechanical linkage between the engine and the wheels.

The 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine is specifically adapted to power the onboard generator and features unique packaging to accommodate the front EDM. The generator mounts directly onto the engine, while a power inverter module connects to a junction box mounted on the vehicle.

The liquid-cooled 92-kWh battery pack’s design efficiently incorporates a pouch cell format in a parallel configuration. Positioned beneath the truck’s floor at the center, the battery maintains a flat floor. Ram offers a swift recharging solution, allowing up to 5 miles of all-electric range per minute with 400-volt DC fast charging at up to 175 kW.

In a recent discussion with Automotive News, Joe Tolkacz, Stellantis’ STLA Frame Propulsion System Chief Engineer, provided insights into the advanced hybrid powertrain embedded within the upcoming 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger, marking a significant leap in the evolution of electrified pickup trucks.

Tolkacz emphasized the crucial role of towing tests in shaping the Ramcharger’s development.”We took one of our competitor’s trucks and loaded it up to their towing rate. Then we took it from Auburn Hills, Michigan, to Flint and back [a total of about 76 miles], and we didn’t make it. We had to stop and charge. We said we really need to do something to extend the capability.”

The team swiftly recognized that a hybrid solution using similar components from the all-new all-electric 2025 Ram 1500 REV would be the answer. “We saw a lot of advantages. It was very tied to the use model for pickups. We think our customers are looking for a no-compromise truck. They like the idea of electric, and so this fit really well with that,” Tolkacz stated.

The Ramcharger boasts an estimated 690-mile range with a fully charged battery and full gas tank. Running solely on electric power, it covers about 141 miles, supported by a substantial 27-gallon gasoline tank, providing a notable advantage in fuel capacity.

In terms of performance, the Ramcharger accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds, owing to a combined output of 663 horsepower and 615 lb.-ft. of torque from its two e-motors. Additionally, it boasts a best-in-class towing capability of 14,000 lbs. with a class 5 hitch, matching its all-electric counterpart.

Nevertheless, the Ramcharger appears to be the ideal solution for individuals seeking an electric pickup for daily commutes while retaining the capability to embark on cross-country trips or tow heavy loads, catering to various truck-related needs.
