This beautiful 1998 Dodge Viper GT2 Championship Edition (commonly referred to as the GTS-R Commemorative Edition) was built along with another 99 units, to celebrate the Viper GTS-R’s 1997 FIA GT2 Championship win and its victory at the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Contrary to popular belief, the car was not built to meet any homologation requirements, as the race car was built first. Only 100 units were produced and due to its popularity, it became a highly regarded collectible in the Viper community.
Compared to the standard car, the GT2 Championship Edition featured the following equipment:

Powering the GT2 Championship Edition was a 8.0-liter (488 cubic-inch) VIPER V-10 delivering 460 horsepower (343 kW) and 500 lb.-ft. (678 N⋅m) of torque. At the time, it was the highest horsepower sports car in America at the time. It was mated to a 6-speed Borg Warner T-56 manual transmission. The same setup would go into the Dodge Viper GTS ACR, a year later.
With only 1,999 miles on the odometer, this example is listed on the popular automotive auction site BringATrailer.com (BaT). Wearing No. 62/100, this car looks to be in pretty good shape. We recently saw No. 90 go up for auction, with only 74 fewer miles on the odometer. It went for $166,001 when everything was said and done.
At its launch, a typical GTS Coupe had a starting price of $66,500. The GT2 added $15,000 to that. With Gas Guzzler Tax and Destination Charges, the car originally sold for $85,200 in 1998. That is $154,863.28 in today’s money with inflation.
The car comes with all of its original manufacturer’s literature, some lithographic prints, build photos, and two remote key fobs. The Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage and lists registration history in Virginia and California. Open manufacturer safety recalls related to the steering and differential frame repair and five-point racing seatbelts are also noted.
