SPOTTED: 2022 Jeep® Wagoneer (WS) – The More Mainstream Full-Size SUV:

We Breakdown The Difference Between Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer...

Last week, we showed you our first real clear images of a 2022 Jeep® Grand Wagoneer (WS) model out testing on public roads. But a second set of photos is showing us another variant of the all-new Ram 1500-based full-size SUV. The new series of photos are showing us some of the slight differences between the more standard Wagoneer and the premium luxury-oriented Grand Wagoneer.

So according to our sources, both the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer models will feature standard-wheelbase and long-wheelbase variants. All of the pre-production models we have seen thus far in the real world, have been of the same standard-wheelbase (which does incorporate three-row seating).

Right of the bat, while looking at the front of the vehicle, you can tell the standard Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer models apart even with heavy camouflage is by the headlamps. The latest set of photos show us the standard Wagoneer trim, featuring a set of LED projector-beam headlamps with LED daytime running lights. The Grand Wagoneer (shown below), features a full LED Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS), including twin bi-functional projector headlamps just like those found on the Ram 1500 Limited Longhorn and Limited models.

It appears the Grand Wagoneer will incorporate a lot of chrome in the front end, while the Wagoneer will be more toned down with more body-color accents, as you can tell looking at the seven slots grille design. Both models will feature a strip of LED fog lamps in the lower front fascia and we believe that all WS models featuring four-wheel-drive (4×4) will feature tow hooks (black on Wagoneer and chrome on Grand Wagoneer).

From the side, the overall shape of the sheet metal appears to be the same. We can see both models feature roof rails, but we can tell that the Grand Wagoneer features a set of chrome rails, while the Wagoneer’s are too camouflaged to tell. But we wouldn’t be surprised if they were painted black.

Looking at the rockers of both vehicles, they are quite different. The Grand Wagoneer features very squared looking rockers which appear to house a new set of power running boards. The Wagoneer on the other hand features a set of stylish-looking rockers, but instead of featuring power running boards, a set of standard running boards sticking out from the side of the body are present. Giving that we expect that the Grand Wagoneer will feature upwards of a $100,000 price tag, the Wagoneer will pull a lot of more basic options to keep the price more in line with vehicles like the Ford Expedition and GMC Yukon.

We also can see chrome trim around the windows on the Grand Wagoneer tester peeking out from under the swirling pattern of camouflage. Following the philosophy of other products in the Jeep lineup, we think that the Wagoneer will ditch the chrome trim around the windows for more of a black rubber look. 

There also is a large difference in the profile of the wheels on both models as well. The Grand Wagoneer is riding on a set of Goodyear Eagle Touring tires, the same set of rubber on Ram 1500 models with 22-inch wheels. So this tells us, that the production Grand Wagoneer models will more than likely feature 20-inch and 22-inch wheels compared to the 24-inch wheels found on the Grand Wagoneer Concept. This particular model has a set of dual 6-spoke wheels. On the Wagoneer model, we see a set of Nexen Roadian HTX all-season tires on a set of sharp-looking split 6-spoke wheels.

Looking at the rear, there appear to be some big differences between the two models. The first noticeable difference is the taillamps. While the Grand Wagoneer features similar rear taillamps as the concept, but with a LED running lighting being covered up that runs across the back of the vehicle. It doesn’t appear that much of the concept’s taillight design will change going into the production. On the Wagoneer, it appears that the lenses will not feature a clear housing, but red instead and feature a more standard LED layout behind the lenses. Both models do have panels covering a Class IV receiver hitch.

Another different change is the rear window wiper design. While the Wagoneer features a wiper sticking through the glass and the lower part of the rear window, the Grand Wagoneer features a strange housing underneath the wiper. It could be an additional camera housing, but we aren’t clear on what exactly it is. Both vehicles feature different exhaust layouts as well. The Grand Wagoneer appears to be powered by the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 judging by its dual rear exhaust coming out from under the rear bumper, while a single exiting exhaust coming out of the rear of the vehicle, suggest a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with eTorque mild-hybrid system. Both engines are expected to be ready at launch, while a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) model will be available a year after launch. That powertrain should be based on the same system going into the Wrangler Unlimited 4xe.

Now, while we don’t have pictures of the inside of both vehicles. Our sources indicated that the Grand Wagoneer Concept’s 12.3-inch driver information display behind the steering wheel, a 12.1-inch horizontal touchscreen serves as the main display screen in the center console, and a 10.25-inch horizontal comfort display touchscreen below, will all make it into the production model. Wagoneer buyers will get a 12.3-inch driver information display and a choice of 10.1-inch or 12.1-inch horizontal touchscreen in the center of the instrument panel. All screens will be running the latest Uconnect 5 software.

We are also hearing that Grand Wagoneer will feature standard 7 passenger seats, which includes a second row of captains chairs and a third-row bench. Wagoneer owners will have the choice of choosing 5 or 7 passenger seating options available.

As for pricing, the Jeep brand has yet to release any figures regarding either the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer models. Sources have said to expect the starting price of the Wagoneer to start in the mid-$50,000 range, while the Grand Wagoneer should start in the low-$70,000 range.
