Opel has pulled back the covers on its new Frontera crossover, leading to speculation about whether it could pave the way for a future replacement of the Jeep® Renegade. Built on the Stellantis Common Modular Platform (CMP), the Frontera falls into the subcompact crossover category in the B-segment, much like the Renegade. However, what sets it apart is its potential for seven-passenger seating, a feature not currently offered by the Renegade. While this may sound promising, it’s essential to note that the Frontera’s compact size may limit the comfort of additional passengers, making it ideal for two adults and up to five smaller children.
The Opel Frontera boasts a striking design that commands attention. Featuring the newly designed Opel Blitz emblem at the forefront and eye-catching wheel arches, it exudes a robust character. Inside, the cockpit offers a modern aesthetic with newly designed steering wheel and two 10-inch widescreens. Practicality is a key focus, with features like the patented Intelli-Seats providing relief for the tailbone and ample storage space of over 17 cubic feet with the seats up and up to 56 cubic feet with the seats folded down. For outdoor enthusiasts, optional roof rails and a specially designed roof tent offer added convenience for overnight adventures.
Regarding powertrain options, the Frontera comes in hybrid or fully electric variants. Starting at around $28,000, the hybrid model pairs a 100-horsepower turbocharged 1.2-liter gasoline engine with a 28-horsepower (21 kW) electric motor and a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. This setup significantly reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to conventional models. Alternatively, the fully electric Frontera Electric offers a range of over 186 miles on a single charge, making it an attractive option for environmentally conscious drivers.
In terms of equipment, the Frontera offers two trim levels: the base Frontera and the higher-spec Frontera GS. Even the base model comes generously equipped, with the GS variant adding features like multimedia infotainment with a 10-inch touchscreen and navigation. Customers can further customize their vehicles with optional packages to suit their preferences.
While the Opel Frontera presents an exciting proposition for the subcompact crossover segment in Europe, we hope it could inspire a next-gen Jeep Renegade in the North American market. With its rugged styling, hybrid and electric powertrain options, and versatile capabilities, a Renegade successor inspired by the Frontera could appeal to adventure-seeking customers looking for an affordable yet capable off-road vehicle.
