Stellantis (FCA US, LLC) is recalling approximately 12,375 units of its 2021 to 2022 Ram ProMaster vehicles due to a wiring harness that may have a poor connection, which can cause the left taillight and left turn signal to become inoperative. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108 requirements, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”
An inoperative left turn signal may not notify other drivers of a turning vehicle, and an inoperative left taillight can reduce the vehicle’s visibility to other drivers. Both scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.
The suspect period began on February 21, 2021, when improper wire harness installation began in vehicle upfit production, and ended on April 28, 2022, when proper wire harness installation began in vehicle upfit production. Supplier and vehicle production records were used to identify the suspect period.
Recall Chronology –
- On March 30, 2022, the FCA US LLC (“FCA US”) Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (“TSRC”) organization was notified of a potential issue related to taillamp/turn signal lamp failures on some FCA US vehicles.
- From April 2022, through January 2024, FCA US TSRC conducted an analysis of taillamp/turn signal lamp failure patterns and vehicle history and determined that the affected vehicles may have been built with a wire harness with incomplete crimping.
- On February 21, 2024, the FCA US TSRC organization recognized a vehicle build issue existed on certain vehicles related to an improper wire harness installation that can lead to the left taillamp/turn signal lamp becoming inoperative, potentially resulting in a noncompliance with FMVSS No. 108.
- On March 07, 2024, FCA US determined, through the Vehicle Regulations Committee, to conduct a voluntary safety recall of the affected vehicles.
