ALWAYS BET ON BLACK: The 2022 Jeep® Grand Wagoneer Obsidian Is Here!

Grand Wagoneer Goes To The Dark Side...

Over the past month, we have seen dealers across the United States and Canada finally taking delivery of the all-new 2022 Jeep® Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer (WS) models. As the most premium offering ever for the Jeep brand, the all-new Grand Wagoneer offers four different variants to satisfy customers looking for the ultimate premium SUV. Among those four variants is the new Obsidian trim.

For those who dislike the chrome touches of the Grand Wagoneer, the Obsidian model is for you. Gone are the chrome accents, in favor of special dark touches across the vehicle, both inside and out. The Grand Wagoneer Obsidian sits right between the Grand Wagoneer Series II and III. The Obsidian takes the standard content of the Series II model and adds the following content, which includes…

  • Gloss Black Exterior Mirrors
  • Body-Color Wheel and Door Flares
  • Dark Onyx Chiseled Metal Instrument Panel (I/P) Trim
  • Global Black Instrument Panel and Doors Trim
  • Piano Black Appliques
  • McIntosh 1,375-Watt Premium Audio System (23 Speakers and a 12-inch Subwoofer)

Under the hood, like all Grand Wagoneers, is the 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine delivering 471 horsepower and 455 lb.-ft. of torque. Using the SRT-based HEMI instead of the “Big Gas Engine” (BGE) unit from the Ram Heavy Duty, the Grand Wagoneer’s 6.4-liter has received some unique enhancements like a unique exhaust manifold, intake manifold, and moving the airbox to the right side of the engine bay. It has also been retuned to deliver a broad torque band to deliver the optimal blend of power and comfort regardless of the load and/or terrain it is conquering.

Combined with a ZF-sourced 8HP75 8-speed automatic transmission with Electronic Range Select (ERS also known as Tow/Haul Mode), the Grand Wagoneer Obsidian is capable of a 0 to 60 mph (0 to 100 km/h) in the 6-second range.

Thanks to a standard 3.92 rear axle ratio, the Grand Wagoneer Obsidian can also tow up to 9,850 lbs.

Don’t think that the Obsidian is a pavement princess either. Obsidian’s Quadra-Drive® II 4×4 system opens up the world with legendary capability. Featuring a rear electronic limited-slip differential and a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio, the automatic 4×4 system offers the power needed to explore most terrain.

Speaking of terrain, Grand Wagoneer’s Selec-Terrain® Traction Management System adjusts shift patterns, engine performance, and torque distribution for maximum traction on tough roads. The active two-speed transfer case automatically shifts between two low-end power options and provides more torque when you need it. Plus, Selec-Speed® control offers outstanding performance while climbing up and downhill, thanks to hill ascent and hill descent control features.

The Grand Wagoneer Obsidian is available in 7 different exterior colors. Those colors include Midnight Sky, Baltic-Gray, Silver-Zynith, Ember Pearl, and Bright White which all feature a Diamond Black-painted roof. For those looking for the ultimate dark machine, a monotone Diamond Black exterior choice is also available. The Bright White is the only no-charge color option, while the rest cost an additional $595 USD / $695 CAD.

While we have seen a lot of Wagoneers and now Grand Wagoneer models, the Obsidian has finally started landing on dealer lots. This Baltic-Gray Obsidian model is currently in inventory at Shaker’s Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram in Watertown, Connecticut.

The Grand Wagoneer Obsidian has a starting U.S. Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $99,845 not including a $2,000 destination charge (Canadian MSRP is $113,995 and that includes a $2,495 destination charge).
