After launching in the North American market in January, the 2019 Jeep Cherokee has finally been shown off in it’s European offering. While the European version is similar to the North American offering, there is a big difference of what is under the hood.
To meet all customer needs and preferences, the engine range of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee has been expanded and offers the choice between different powertrain groups.
In detail, the 2.2-liter MultiJet II turbodiesel engine with Stop-Start technology (ESS) offers incredible flexibility and optimum performance in all conditions. The 150 horsepower version with a torque rating of 350 Nm (258 ft.-lbs of torque) is offered in combination with the six-speed manual transmission and the 4×2 configuration. The 195 horsepower version is combined with the 9-speed automatic transmission and offers 4×4 configurations (with 4WD Low, two-speed PTU available on request) and 4×2 – the latter a new feature in the Cherokee range. The maximum torque delivered is 450 Nm (332 ft.-lbs of torque).
The 2.2-liter MultiJet II four-cylinder architecture features a specific 16-valve twin-shaft aluminum head, designed to increase the operating pressure of the common rail system with Injection Rate Shaping, which works at 2000 bar. The design of the pistons, the connecting rods and the crankshaft is optimized with a view to containing the weight.
The shape of the combustion chamber and the reduced compression ratio ensure low emissions of NOx pollutants and high performance, while the new solenoid injectors spray finely the fuel, with clear advantages both on the front of the silent operation, both on the containment of consumption.
The engine features an unprecedented variable geometry turbocharger integrated into the exhaust manifold: a solution that reduces engine weight and improves the functionality of the ‘SCR on filter’ exhaust gas treatment system. This solution integrates the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) functionality on a DPF substrate, to promote NOx reduction through ADblue injection (passive SCR under the floor treats the unreacted ammonia continuing the reduction process) and particulate reduction through regeneration management.
The 2.2-liter engine complies with recent emissions regulations.
In 2019, the new 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo-injected direct injection engine will be available, developing 270 horsepower (estimated) and 400 Nm (332 ft.-lbs) of torque in combination with the nine-speed automatic transmission. Equipped with Stop-Start (ESS) technology, this new gasoline engine ensures fuel efficiency and will be offered in conjunction with all-wheel drive.
The Jeep Cherokee engines can be combined with the TorqueFlite nine-speed automatic transmission. Optimized, it offers new control software to ensure precise responses, fast accelerations and fluid changes. It allows you to tackle brilliant departures and to benefit from the fluid and constant supply of power over long motorway sections.
And for the first time on a Cherokee, the model can be equipped with a manual mode with paddle on the steering wheel to offer more sportiness and driving comfort (standard on versions with automatic transmission and four-wheel drive depending on the equipment).
The Jeep Cherokee has been designed to offer complete safety equipment. The first security element is represented by the Compact US Wide (CUSW) architecture, consisting of a solid structure made of 65% high-strength steel. To this, Jeep engineers have added a wealth of active and passive safety, which includes eight airbags, the ParkView reversing camera with dynamic grid, electronic stability control (ESC), the Electronic Roll Mitigation anti-tip system (ERM ), the Active Forward Collision Warning-Plus with Pedestrian Emergency Braking, the Blind-spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Path Detection, the LaneSense Lane Departure Warning-Plus, the Advanced Brake Assist and the Active Speed Limiter – all standard on European range.
In Europe, the new Cherokee line-up will offer four trim levels at launch – the Sport, Longitude, Limited and Overland. The Cherokee Sport trim – has been enhanced offering additional style features and technology, including Full LED Projector headlamps, 17″ painted aluminum wheels, leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel with mounted audio controls, a 5-inch UconnectTM Touchscreen Radio system with voice command and Bluetooth connectivity, and a full line of standard safety features to face the most challenging urban adventures, including Forward Collision Warning-Plus, LaneSense Lane Departure Warning-Plus, Advanced Brake Assist and Blind-spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Path Detection.
The Jeep Cherokee Longitude adds more functionality and enhanced styling, with body colour mirrors and door handles, bright day light opening mouldings and silver roof rails, new premium cloth seats, dual zone automatic temperature control, Keyless Enter-N-GoTM, Rear parking sensors with Parkview Rear Back-up camera and a 7-inch High-Definition UconnectTM touchscreen infotainment system with Android AutoTM and Apple CarPlay connectivity.
Premium style and additional amenities come together in the Limited trim offering Nappa leather-trimmed electrically adjustable and heated front seats, carpet covered cargo space, 7-inch color TFT configurable instrument cluster, new premium 18-inch painted aluminum wheels, UconnectTM high definition 8.4-inch Navigation System with Apple CarPlay support, Android AutoTM technology and a premium audio system. Also included as standard are an all-new hands-free power liftgate, Adaptive Cruise Control-Plus with Stop & Go function and front parking sensors.
The top of the range Jeep Cherokee Overland brings even more luxury into the everyday adventure and adds to the to the standard equipment of the Limited new 19-inch polished aluminum wheels, body-coloured painted fascias and CommandView dual-pane power sunroof.
