RECALL: 2020 to 2023 Jeep® Wrangler For An Unnecessary Frame Stud

Stellantis, the parent company of FCA US, LLC, has announced a recall of around 57,885 units of two-door 2020 to 2023 Jeep® Wrangler (JL) due to a potential safety issue. The recall has been initiated because of a stud on the frame assembly, which may puncture the fuel tank in the event of a crash, leading to fuel leakage.

This defect could increase the risk of a fire, especially if there is an ignition source present. In response to this, FCA US has taken action to rectify the issue and ensure the safety of its customers.

Which Vehicles Are Affected –

The recall notice explains that some 2020 to 2023 Jeep Wranglers may have been manufactured with an unused and unnecessary frame stud. The suspect period for this issue began on October 16th, 2019, when frames with the frame stud were first introduced into vehicle production, and ended on May 14th, 2022, when frames with the frame stud were no longer used in vehicle production. Supplier and vehicle production records were used to determine the suspect period.

Vehicles outside of this suspect period, as well as those with frames that do not have the frame stud, are not affected by this recall.

Recall Chronology –

• On June 28th, 2022, the FCA US Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (“TSRC”) organization opened an investigation as a result of an assembly plant report of some frames containing the frame stud.
• From June 28th, 2022, through February 22nd, 2023, FCA US TSRC reviewed supplier data, met with engineering to understand the frame design and change history, and review frame and vehicle measurement data.
• As of March 9th, 2023, FCA US has identified zero customer assistance records, zero warranty claims, and zero field reports potentially related to this issue for all markets.
• As of March 9th, 2023, FCA US is not aware of any accidents or injuries potentially related to this issue for all markets.
• On March 16th, 2023, FCA US determined, through the Vehicle Regulations Committee, to conduct a voluntary safety recall of the affected vehicles.

Remedy –

To address this issue, FCA US dealers will inspect and, if necessary, remove the frame stud and apply paint free of charge. The company expects to mail out owner notification letters on Friday, May 12th, 2023.
