Ram 1500 REV With 500 Mile Range Is Still A Long Way Out

REV Will Launch With 168 kWh Pack, 229 kWh Pack Won't Be Out Until Late 2026!

Ram is pressing forward with the launch of its all-electric 2025 Ram 1500 REV, even as electric pickup truck sales see a recent decline. The REV boasts impressive stats compared to its market counterparts. Built on the STLA Frame architecture, an evolution of the Ram DT architecture designed for electrification, the REV promises exceptional performance benchmarks in towing, payload, charge time, and range.

The REV aims for a 0 to 60 mph (0 to 97 km/h) time of 4.4 seconds. It can ford up to 24 inches of water and delivers 654 horsepower and 620 lb.-ft. of torque. It boasts a best-in-class payload capacity of 2,700 lbs. and a towing capacity of 14,000 lbs. These figures are remarkable for a half-ton pickup truck.

However, what caught everyone’s attention was Ram’s estimated range capability. Offered with two battery packs, the REV will initially come with a standard 168 kWh battery pack, providing a range of up to 350 miles. An optional 229 kWh battery pack promises a best-in-class 500 miles of range.

Recently, Ram updated its website to include the Ram 1500 REV. Upon looking through the information, a few of our keen-eyed readers saw that the 229 kWh battery pack won’t be available until late 2026—almost two years after the truck’s launch!

A major bummer for those looking to choose the new all-electric pickup for those long travels or making use of the truck’s 14,000 lb. towing capacity.

While production is set to commence later this year at the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant in Michigan, the delay in the availability of the larger battery pack may deter those seeking extended range for long travels or heavy towing. However, the Range Extended Paradigm Breaker (REPB) Ramcharger, set to debut in early 2025, could serve as an alternative solution for those needing more range.

Although the REV initially seemed to promise an impressive range, General Motors (GM) has already rolled out their Chevrolet Silverado EV, boasting a range of 440 miles on select trims, which surpasses the REV’s range. To compete, Ram may need to ensure the REV is competitively priced. For instance, the Silverado EV 3WT (Level 3 Work Truck) with a range of 393 miles starts at $72,905 with destination. If Ram can offer a more budget-friendly option with the REV Tradesman model, they may attract customers seeking affordability in an electric pickup.

The Ram ProMaster EV has a range of just 162 miles. That distance is fine for the market niche of urban delivery vans. It is probably adequate for suburban routes as well. The 500 mile range figure for the REV is most likely aimed at the consumer market. Commercial and fleet buyers tend to ignore the hype and look for efficiency. A Tradesman trim REV with the smaller battery pack probably will match the needs of a number municipal fleets. I have observed how the pickup trucks are used by the support services at the airport I work at. A fully electric pickup could easily handle such tasks, probably even better than gas fueled trucks. The standard battery range would be more than enough.

Ram better steep up on pricing. They are way behind the competition. Pricing is the only way to stay in the game.

No rush, the market is not there in most applications. As others have correctly commented, get the capacity up, price it correctly and build just enough to meet the clearly niche demand in the marketplace. Check Ford on this one.

With the Ramcharger, this is dead on arrival.

It's a truck. Sometimes trucks have commercial uses and are purchases by a small business. Some larger fleet Vehicle fleets will have a professional buyer on their staff whose job is to have complete knowledge of the company's needs and what the best solutions are to meet those needs. The last I looked, gas and diesel fuel are pretty expensive. The EV as a consumer toy idea probably has passed, but there are niches to be filled in the marketplace where battery electric or a plugin hybrid works best. I plug in our fleet's vehicles on a private charging setup. It is not public and not subject to the abuses and unreliability of public charging. Many commercial users will invest in similar solutions because for them, an EV is the better answer.
