Citroën Introduces It’s Updated 2022 C5 Aircross Hybrid Compact SUV:

Updated Crossover Hits The Market In June...

With more than 260,000 sales since its launch in 2018, the Citroën C5 Aircross has made its mark in a highly competitive compact SUV segment in the European marketplace. The C5 Aircross was part of the automaker’s plan to focus on the growing SUV/Crossover segments, as the automotive market moved away from passenger cars. But earlier this week, Citroën unveiled its updated C5 Aircross which looks to have even more tech, hybrid capabilities, and a more rugged styling update.

Taking a first look at the C5 Aircross, the vehicle longer features the soft split headlight design. The styling of the front end has had a facelift to become more vertical and modern. Featuring the new interpretation of the Citroën logo, which now detaches itself from the daytime running lights (DRLs). The Citroën chevrons now appear in black lacquer set off in chrome and extend visually via a set of increasingly tight chrome and black piano keys that gradually blend into LED daytime running lights.

Characteristic of the new Citroën identity, the V-shaped DRLs’ LED signature is made of a piano keys design which gives a hi-tech and deeper-looking 3D effect to the front lights. Furthermore, the LED Vision projector is more discrete and darker, prolonging visually the black grille and further accentuating the robustness of the vehicle.

Beneath the grille, the new styling of the air intake area visually widens the front end of C5 Aircross and gives it a more imposing stance on the road. The air curtains (the bumps located on the vehicle’s lower side), have become open and functional, appear to be sculpted by the air, and help to improve the aerodynamics. The color of the inserts adorning the air curtains contributes to the vehicle’s move upmarket, with glossy or pearlescent shades such as Glossy Black and Dark Chrome. The main air intake in the center also becomes more dynamic and elegant thanks to sharp lines echoing the style of the central air intakes of C4 and C5X.

The skid plate in the lower area of the front bumper makes the front end more dynamic and gives it a more high-quality and prestigious appearance. It is available in two very upmarket materials, depending on the level of finish: in Glossy Black on the Live, Live Pack, and Feel trim levels, and in Glossy Aluminum on the Feel Pack, C-Series, Shine, and Shine Pack trims.

Completely consistent with the front of the vehicle C5 Aircross has a new three-dimensional LED light signature at the rear. Without changing size, the lamp unit is now fitted with dark and structured glass, highlighting the three LED lighting modules that constitute the light signature. The graphic elements accentuate the elegance and consistency with the front light signature. As on the front end, the subtle piano key design reinforces the deep 3D effect of the light signature.

Inside, the C5 Aircross gets a number of tweaks for the new model year. The center console has been redesigned with a black leather-effect-fabric enhanced by chrome design lines which underline, on automatic gearboxes, a more ergonomic layout of controls like a new hi-tech e-Toggle gear selector, a new driving mode selection button incorporating the Grip Control function and, on the plug-in-hybrid versions, an intuitive choice of the driving mode (Electric, Hybrid, or Sport). The center console also integrates a large storage compartment regrouping the connectivity with 2 USB ports and a wireless charger.

There is also a new freestanding 10-inch infotainment display. The touchscreen has been positioned higher up on the instrument panel (I/P) and now placing the air vents below it. Citroën does still allow separate controls for the climate control settings, something more and more customers have asked for as more vehicles move forward with bigger infotainment screens. There is also the addition of a new 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, something Stellantis continues to implement in all of their vehicles.

Citroën also has revamped the powertrain for the C5 Aircross. Gasoline and diesel options continue, however, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) engine is now available for the mid-level trims. The PHEV powertrain combines a turbocharged 1.6-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor and a 13.2 kW battery, allowing the C5 Aircross to get up to 31 miles (55 km) of all-electric driving at speeds up to 83 mph (135 kph). Charging is fast, with a full charge completed in less than 2 hours with a Wallbox fast charger.

With zero CO2 emissions, it gives the C5 Aircross freedom to access urban areas where gasoline and diesel vehicles are banned.

The C5 Aircross offers Stellantis’ latest generation of safety and comfort technologies. Drivers will benefit from 20 benchmark driver-assistance systems in the compact SUV segment. These include Highway Driver Assist, a Level 2 autonomous driving system, combining Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with a Stop & Go function, and the Active Lane Departure Warning (LDW) System while providing an enhanced feeling of safety thanks to permanent support driver-assistance.

It's still somewhat unattractive in my opinion - those ridiculous and pointless indentations in the side trims cheapen the car no end. Also, a more modern petrol engine to replace the capricious Prince unit would have been more of an upgrade than the relatively pointless styling tweaks. Citroen, get your mojo back and produce great cars like the DS/ID, GS/A, SM and CX again and stop selling on cheapness.

I thought Citroen mojo was expressed with vehicles such as the 2CV, Mehari, and the H-van.

Indeed so, whatever they do now is little more than rebadge and mildly reskin bland Peugeots. That erstwhile spirit of creativity and engineering brilliance is long gone. Citroens of old were never boring, however they may have had various issues and idiosyncracies but in general they excelled at what they were meant to do. That Airblob thing could be any brand you care to name .
