Stellantis Ends Remote Era, Orders Employees Back to Office
Automaker Shifts Strategy as It Moves Away from Tavares' Cost-Cutting Approach...
Stellantis is shaking up its workforce strategy, ordering employees to return to on-site work three to five days a week starting March 3. The move signals a departure from former CEO Carlos Tavares’ cost-cutting approach and aligns with the company’s renewed focus on reviving its U.S. market performance.
The automaker had previously embraced remote work through its “New Era of Agility” initiative, allowing non-assembly line workers to work from home 70% of the time. However, under the leadership of North America Chief Operating Officer (COO) Antonio Filosa, Stellantis is now emphasizing a stronger in-person presence to drive collaboration and innovation.
“As we accelerate our transformation, we recognize the value of consistent on-site presence and see it as a key enabler to win in the marketplace,” Stellantis spokesperson Jodi Tinson said in a statement. “Many of our teams are already working on-site 3 to 5 days a week as we maintain a flexible work environment. Today’s announcement is confirmation that bringing teams together to build stronger connections is a competitive necessity.”
Stellantis’ decision follows similar moves by General Motors (GM) and Ford, which have increased office attendance requirements for salaried employees.
This isn’t the first time Stellantis has tightened its remote work policies. In June, the company required engineers at its Auburn Hills facility to return to on-site work more frequently, signaling a gradual shift away from its earlier flexibility. With this latest mandate, Stellantis is reinforcing its commitment to a stronger in-person workforce to regain its competitive edge in the U.S. market.
