Stellantis Chairman Met With Trump Before Inauguration

Stellantis Ready To Adapt To New Trade and Manufacturing Policies...

Stellantis Chairman John Elkann recently met with U.S. President Donald Trump and top administration officials before the inauguration to discuss the company’s readiness for potential changes in trade and manufacturing policies under the new leadership. The meetings, held in Washington, underscore the automaker’s focus on staying competitive in North America.

“Stellantis is committed to playing a pivotal role in strengthening America’s manufacturing base,” Elkann said after the discussions. With Trump considering a 25% tariff on vehicles imported from Mexico and Canada, Stellantis has been proactive in highlighting its contributions to the U.S. economy through local manufacturing.

The company operates two assembly plants in Mexico. The Saltillo Assembly Complex produces Ram 2500/3500 Heavy Duty trucks, 3500/4500/5500 Heavy Duty Chassis Cabs, and Ram ProMaster vans. The Toluca Assembly Plant produces the Jeep® Wagoneer S, the upcoming Jeep Recon 4xe, and the Jeep Compass.

Stellantis operates two additional plants in Canada. The Windsor Assembly Plant produces the Chrysler Pacifica, the Chrysler Voyager (U.S. market only), the Chrysler Grand Caravan (Canadian market only), and the Dodge Charger. The Brampton Assembly Plant is being retooled to produce the next-generation Jeep Compass in 2026.

According to industry analysts, these plants account for 40% of Stellantis’ U.S. vehicle sales.

Adapting to Policy Changes –

Trump’s inauguration speech also hinted at a shift in electric vehicle (EV) priorities, as he revoked a 2021 executive order aiming for 50% EV sales by 2030. While Stellantis has heavily invested in EVs, Elkann emphasized a balanced approach. “We remain committed to sustainable mobility while aligning with market demands and evolving policies,” he said.

Elkann expressed confidence in the company’s ability to adapt to the changing landscape, leveraging its robust North American footprint. “President Trump’s focus on revitalizing manufacturing aligns with Stellantis’ goals of driving innovation and supporting the U.S. economy,” he added.

With a solid manufacturing presence and a focus on innovation, Stellantis is well-positioned to navigate the Trump administration’s policies while continuing to meet American consumers’ demands.

This is good news. Elkann is well connected and a very smart guy. He went straight to the source which is exactly what he needed to do. I'm sure he has a plan forward now for the Mopar brands or I hope he does.
Personally, I'm not a fan of tariffs unless we are not getting a fair deal or don't have access to the markets of said countries. I do believe they can be used as a negotiating tool with some success for access to our market. We give many countries full access to our market but can't sell much of our stuff in theirs. And when it comes to Canada and Mexico, I'd much rather trade and have open markets with them than many others. I'm hoping that we can strengthen ties with our North American neighbors and be more like one country someday, than 3 separate ones.
