Stellantis is issuing a voluntary recall for an estimated 263,247 fourth-generation Ram pickups to replace their side-curtain airbags. An investigation was conducted by FCA US LLC. discovered certain vehicles may be equipped with airbag inflators that were contaminated by moisture during the supplier’s manufacturing process. Such inflators may rupture, even without airbag deployment, possibly sending debris into the cabin of the vehicle.
According to FCA US LLC., they are aware of a single rupture involving one of its vehicles. The report states there were no injuries. It also states the inflators were produced by a supplier implicated in a similar recall by another automaker.
The vehicles affected are all fourth-generation Ram pickups including…
- 2015 to 2018 – Ram 1500 (DS)
- 2019 to 2020 – Ram 1500 Classic (DS)
- 2015 to 2020 – Ram 2500 (DJ)
- 2015 to 2020 – Ram 3500 (D2)
- 2015 to 2020 – Ram 3500 (DD)
Since many people confuse the newer 2019 to Present Ram Heavy Duty models with the fifth-generation Ram 1500 (DT), the 2019 and newer Heavy Duty models are a mid-cycle-action (MCA) or refresh of the fourth-generation Ram. This means the true fifth-generation Ram 1500 (DT) pickups are unaffected by the recall.
As with all safety recalls, service will be provided free of charge. Customers will vehicles affected by the recall will be advised when they may schedule service; those with questions or concerns may call 1-800-853-1403.
According to the recall, the recall campaign affects 212,373 in the United States, 42,532 in Canada, 3,802 in Mexico, and 4,540 outside North America. A small number of inflators sold as replacement parts are also subject to recall.
