RECALL: Jeep® Wagoneer / Grand Wagoneer For B-Pillar Trim

B-Pillar May Trim May Interfere With Airbags...

Stellantis (FCA US, LLC), has issued a recall affecting approximately 44,708 units of their 2022 to 2023 Jeep® Wagoneer / Grand Wagoneer (WS) vehicles. The reason for the recall is a potential problem with the upper B-pillar interior trim not being properly seated, which could interfere with the deployment of the side curtain airbag (SABIC). This issue results in non-compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 226, specifically the requirement for ejection mitigation.

The concern is that if the side curtain airbag (SABIC) does not deploy as intended due to the improperly seated trim, it could compromise the protection of occupants during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

This recall action pertains to vehicles produced between February 24th, 2021, and June 7nd, 2022. The determination of this timeframe is based on records of vehicle production.

Recall Chonology –

  • In June 14th, 2022, the Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (TSRC) team at FCA US was alerted about a potential issue related to the upper B-pillar trim affecting certain 2022-2023 Jeep Wagoneer and Jeep Grand Wagoneer vehicles.
  • From June to October 2022, FCA US TSRC analyzed various data sources, including warranty claims, customer records, and vehicle history, to identify instances of improperly seated upper B-pillar trim. Simultaneously, initial discussions with FCA US Interior Engineering and Manufacturing took place to understand the design and potential failure.
  • From October 2022 to February 2023, FCA US TSRC engaged with FCA US Restraints Engineering, Interior Engineering, and Manufacturing to continue investigating the issue and assess its potential consequences.
  • Between February and June 2023, FCA US TSRC concluded discussions with FCA US Restraints Engineering, Interior Engineering, and Manufacturing, leading to the identification of the specific group of vehicles affected by the issue.
  • On June 21st, 2023, FCA US TSRC determined that certain vehicles had a manufacturing issue related to the upper B-pillar trim, causing non-compliance with FMVSS No. 226 Ejection Mitigation.
  • On July 28th, 2023, following deliberations by the Vehicle Regulations Committee, FCA US decided to initiate a voluntary safety recall for the impacted vehicles.

As part of the recall process, authorized dealerships will conduct inspections and reseat or replace the trim components as necessary, all at no cost to the vehicle owners. Notification letters to owners are scheduled to be sent out on September 22nd, 2023. Vehicle owners can contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403 for further assistance.
