RECALL: 2020-2023 Ram 1500 Classic Trailer-Tow Mirror Issue

Driver-Side Mirror Glass May Detach...

Stellantis (FCA US, LLC) has recalled approximately 31,676 units of its 2020 to 2023 Ram 1500 Classic (DS) half-ton pickup equipped with heated trailer-tow mirrors. The mirror glass may detach from the driver’s side heated trailer-tow mirror, causing these trucks to fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 111, “Rear Visibility.”

Some 2020 through 2023 model year Ram 1500 Classic trucks equipped with a driver-side heated trailer-tow rearview mirror may experience detached glass from the backing plate. Detached driver-side mirror glass reduces visibility and could result in a vehicle crash without prior warning.

The suspect period began on September 24, 2020, for vehicles built at the Saltillo Truck Assembly Plant (STAP) and October 1, 2020, for vehicles built at the Warren Truck Assembly Plant (WTAP), when suspect driver-side heated trailer-tow mirror assemblies were introduced in vehicle production, through April 10, 2023, at WTAP and April 11, 2023, at STAP, when they were no longer used in vehicle production. The suspect population was determined using part shipment information and vehicle production records. Similar vehicles not included in the recall were built with driver-side mirror assemblies with different designs, which are not suspect, or were built outside the suspect period.

Recall Chronology –

  • July 21, 2023: FCA US Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance (TSRC) became aware of the issue.
  • July 2023 – September 2024: An analysis of detached driver-side heated trailer-tow mirror glass failure patterns and vehicle history was conducted.
  • September 18, 2024: FCA US TSRC recognized that certain vehicles had a build issue related to a condition that can lead to detached driver-side heated trailer-tow mirror glass, potentially resulting in noncompliance with FMVSS No. 111.
  • October 3, 2024: FCA US determined, through the Vehicle Regulations Committee, to conduct a voluntary safety recall of the affected vehicles.
