RECALL: 53,849 Alfa Romeo Models for Potential Fuel Pump Failure

Fuel Delivery Module Defect May Lead to Engine Stalls and Loss of Motive Power

Stellantis (FCA US, LLC) has announced a recall of approximately 53,849 units of its 2017–2019 Alfa Romeo Giulia (GA) and 2018–2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio (GU) models due to a potential fuel pump failure. A failing fuel pump may reduce or stop fuel flow, resulting in engine fuel starvation.

Fuel starvation can cause a sudden loss of motive power (LOMP) without warning, increasing the risk of a crash. In some cases, customers may notice the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) illuminating before the issue occurs.

Recall Vehicle Population –

2019 Alfa Romeo Giulia Nero Edizione. (Alfa Romeo).

The recall involves approximately 24,382 Alfa Romeo Stelvio vehicles produced between April 12, 2017, and June 26, 2019, and approximately 29,467 Alfa Romeo Giulia vehicles produced between September 2, 2016, and June 26, 2019.

The suspect production periods were identified through plant records, beginning with the start of 2018 model year Stelvio production and the start of 2017 model year Giulia production, and ending when vehicles were no longer equipped with the defective parts. There are no similar vehicles outside these production ranges included in this recall.

The affected fuel pump assemblies were supplied by Vitesco Technologies Germany GmbH.

Recall Chronology –

2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio and Giulia Quadrifoglio. (Alfa Romeo).
    • August 25, 2023 – FCA US LLC (“FCA US”) received a Pre-Investigation Request from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding allegations of low-pressure fuel pump assembly failures in 2017–2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia vehicles. These failures were reported to potentially result in engine stalls and/or a loss of motive power (LOMP).

    • September 29, 2023 – FCA US submitted its response to NHTSA, providing preliminary information concerning the alleged low-pressure fuel pump assembly failures in the subject vehicles.

    • January 8, 2024 – NHTSA opened a Preliminary Evaluation (PE24-003) into 2017–2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia vehicles for low-pressure fuel pump assembly failures that may cause engine stalls and/or LOMP while driving.

    • February 16, 2024 – FCA US received an Information Request (IR) associated with PE24-003. This request sought detailed information regarding allegations of low-pressure fuel pump failures in certain 2017–2018 model year Alfa Romeo Giulia vehicles equipped with turbocharged 2.0-liter I4 and 2.9-liter V6 engines.

    • April 8, 2024 – FCA US submitted all requested information to NHTSA in response to IR PE24-003, which included warranty claims, field reports, and technical data related to the alleged failures.

    • April 15, 2024 – Stellantis Europe Customer Experience (CX) opened an internal investigation into potential low-pressure fuel pump failures on 2017–2018 model year Alfa Romeo Giulia vehicles. This investigation was initiated to determine whether the failures could lead to an engine stall and/or a sudden LOMP event.

    • April 2024 – June 2024 – Stellantis Europe CX and engineering teams reviewed warranty claims, field reports, and customer assistance records to better understand how customers were experiencing the condition and to evaluate potential safety consequences.

    • July 10, 2024 – NHTSA issued FCA US an additional request for information related to PE24-003, seeking further clarification and data to aid in its evaluation of the issue.

    • July 30, 2024 – FCA US provided its supplemental response to NHTSA, supplying additional information and analysis related to the low-pressure fuel pump condition.

    • July 2024 – September 2024 – FCA engineering began collecting failed fuel delivery modules (FDMs) from the field for further analysis. The intent was to study returned components in detail to better understand failure mechanisms and potential consequences.

    • October 2024 – December 2024 – FCA engineering and supplier quality teams conducted component-level testing in collaboration with the supplier. These evaluations focused on identifying potential failure modes within the FDMs and determining where in the production process those failure modes might occur.

    • January 2025 – April 2025 – FCA engineering, supplier quality, and the supplier continued joint efforts to identify and replicate the issue under bench-level testing conditions. This stage of the investigation was intended to validate theories regarding the observed failures.

    • May 2025 – July 2025 – FCA engineering, supplier quality, and the supplier were able to duplicate the failure in a complete vehicle system environment. The results from the vehicle-level testing correlated with earlier bench test findings, confirming the failure mode.

    • August 29, 2025 – Stellantis Europe S.p.A identified a total of 437 customer complaints and field reports in North America that were potentially related to this condition.

    • August 29, 2025 – Stellantis Europe S.p.A also reported awareness of five crashes, three injuries, and zero fires potentially related to this issue across all markets.

    • September 2, 2025 – Stellantis Europe S.p.A, through its Vehicle Regulations Committee, determined that a safety defect exists in certain vehicles equipped with the affected low-pressure fuel pump assemblies.

2019 Alfa Romeo Giulia Ti Q4. (Alfa Romeo).

The remedy for this condition is currently under development. Interim owner notification letters, advising owners of the safety risk, are expected to be mailed on October 29, 2025. Owners will receive an additional letter once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US’s number for this recall is 93C.

Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning September 16, 2025.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-888-275-9171) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
