The results are in and the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 has improved significantly better in all around crash test performance compared to the truck in replaces. The Insurance Institute For Highway Safety (IIHS), has released the in-depth details of the crash test evaluations it had done on the all-new Ram 1500.
Beginning with the all-new 2019 1500 models built after July 2018, the cab mounts to the vehicle frame at the C-pillars were strengthened to improve occupant protection in small overlap frontal crashes.
Two tests of the Ram 1500 Crew Cab were conducted by the Institute; with vehicle specifications for the two trucks were identical for the small overlap frontal driver side crash test. In the first test, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) identified possible prior dummy ankle damage that may have caused elevated injury measures on the left lower leg. In the second test with a new ankle assembly installed, there were also indications of elevated left lower leg injury. Therefore, the ratings are based on combined results from both tests.
The Ram 1500 Crew Cab earned the highest “Good” rating in all six crash tests. While the truck was rated “Superior” for its Front Crash Prevention rating based on the performance of its optional Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning Plus system that is part of the Advanced Safety Group package.
A 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie Crew Cab 4×2 was tested for roof strength and recieved a “Good” rating after having a peak force of 22,302lbs applied to the roof of the Crew Cab.
However, the only categories where the 2019 Ram 1500 came up short were headlight performance and ease of use of the child seat anchors (LATCH).
The Ram 1500’s standard halogen headlamps found on the Tradesman and Big Horn (Lone Star) trim levels were rated “Marginal”. This rating was given to its “Good” rated straightaway performance and “Inadequate” ratings in curves in four tests.
The LED headlamps found on the Big Horn (Lone Star) with Premium Lighting Group, Rebel and Laramie also received a “Marginal” rating. According to the test results, straightaway, visibility was fair on the left side of the road and inadequate on the right side. On curves, visibility was good on both right curves, fair on the sharp left curve and inadequate on the gradual left curve. The low beams created some glare. While with the high beams on a straightaway, visibility was good on the right side of the road and fair on the left side. On curves, visibility was good on the gradual right curve, fair on the sharp right curve and inadequate on both left curves.
The premium LED lamps with Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) which are standard equipment on the Laramie Longhorn and Limited models, were given an overall rating of “Poor”. Due to the excessive glare with the low beam test, the headlights received the lowest score available. On the straightaway, visibility was good on both sides of the road. On curves, visibility was good in all four tests. While high beams on the straightaway, visibility was rated fair on both sides of the road. On curves, visibility was good in all four tests.
The ease of use of the child seat anchors (LATCH) in the rear leather seats of the Ram 1500 Limited were rated “Marginal” due to their hard-to-find location.
Please note that the Front Crash Prevention and Headlight ratings also apply to Ram 1500 Quad Cab models. However, all other results are exclusively rated for Ram 1500 Crew Cab models. All models that performed in the crash testing where Ram 1500 Crew Cab 4×2 models and equipped with 5.7-liter HEMI V8 powertrains. 2019 Ram 1500 Quad Cab models have yet to be tested.
Compare to the 2018 Ram 1500 results, the 2019 Ram 1500 scored much better in the driver small overlap frontal crash test, and roof strength. For the Insurance Institute For Highway Safety (IIHS) full results, you can find HERE.
