New 8-Speed Transmission Coming To Dodge Charger SIXPACK
Stellantis To Debut 880RE Gen4 Automatic Transmission...
There has been a surprising amount of excitement since we posted our article last Sunday about Dodge’s reportedly accelerated release of its upcoming Charger SIXPACK internal combustion engine (ICE) models. It seems that a number of Mopar enthusiasts are truly excited about the twin-turbocharged next-gen Charger, even though it won’t have a HEMI® V8 under the hood. This is great news, especially given how controversial the all-electric Charger Daytona has been.
However, the new SIXPACK lineup will not feature a manual transmission option for those who enjoy shifting gears. Instead, according to our sources, Dodge has opted to equip the 2025 Charger SIXPACK models with the all-new 880RE 8-speed automatic transmission. This new transmission enhances the latest Charger lineup’s performance, efficiency, and responsiveness.
The 880RE transmission will be available on both the Standard-Output (S/O) and High-Output (H/O) versions of the Charger SIXPACK, offering a reliable and smooth driving experience suited for Dodge’s twin-turbocharged Hurricane 3.0-liter I-6 engines. Built by Stellantis at the Kokomo Transmission Plant under ZF’s fourth-generation design, the 880RE is designed for rear-wheel-drive-based vehicles and brings top-tier performance with electronic controls, supporting rear-wheel, AWD, and 4×4 configurations.
What is the 880RE Transmission? –
The 880RE is Dodge’s latest in its 8-speed transmission series. Built under license from ZF Friedrichshafen AG at Stellantis’ Kokomo Transmission plant in Indiana, it has a torque rating of up to 600 lb.-ft. The new Gen4 units can pair with ICE, mild-hybrid (mHEV), and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) systems, making them a versatile choice across the Stellantis lineup.

For the Charger SIXPACK lineup, Dodge will offer two powertrains at launch:
- Four-Door Standard-Output (S/O): Delivering 420 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque, powered by the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter Hurricane S/O I-6 engine.
- Two-Door High-Output (H/O): Offering 550 horsepower and 520 lb.-ft. of torque with the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter Hurricane H/O I-6 engine.
Both engines benefit from the advanced 880RE automatic transmission, engineered for high-performance responsiveness. This transmission ensures smooth and efficient power delivery through all eight gears, enhancing the driving experience.
Key Features and Flexibility –
The 880RE’s shared core components, like the gear train, clutch, and electronic control unit, allow for streamlined production while maintaining reliability and adaptability. With the flexibility to add electrification-ready components, such as an eMotor, advanced torque converter, and power electronics, the 880RE transmission can support Dodge’s goals for future-ready technology without sacrificing its high-performance ICE compatibility.
By combining the strength of the 880RE transmission with twin-turbo HURRICANE engines, the 2025 Dodge Charger SIXPACK lineup delivers an exciting blend of power, efficiency, and advanced technology. This will appeal to performance enthusiasts eager for the next evolution of Dodge’s Charger legacy.
