Jeep® Brings Back 8-Speed 850RE For Wrangler Unlimited V6

Fan-Favorite Transmission Returns For 2025...

Jeep® has officially announced the return of the TorqueFlite 850RE 8-speed automatic transmission as an option for the 2025 Wrangler Unlimited models equipped with the award-winning 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine. Jeep discontinued the option in 2023 on the Wrangler Unlimited. The decision to bring the 850RE back was driven by strong feedback from Jeep’s dedicated community of off-road enthusiasts, who have been vocal about their desire for more transmission options.

The Wrangler (JL) lineup for 2025 offers one of the most diverse powertrain selections in the SUV market, giving buyers the flexibility to choose the perfect combination of power and efficiency for their adventures. Among the available options are:

  • 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 paired with a 6-speed Aisin AL6 manual transmission.
  • 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with the 8-speed TorqueFlite 850RE automatic transmission (optional).
  • 2.0-liter Hurricane4 Turbo I4 matched with the 8-speed TorqueFlite 850RE automatic transmission.
  • 2.0-liter Hurricane4 Turbo I4 PHEV coupled with the 8-speed ZF 8P75PH automatic transmission (plug-in hybrid).
  • 6.4-liter HEMI® V8, exclusive to the Rubicon 392, mated to the 8-speed ZF TorqueFlite 8HP75 automatic transmission.

The return of the 850RE transmission provides Pentastar V6 Wrangler Unlimited buyers with an automatic option that balances smooth performance with fuel efficiency. The 8-speed transmission is priced at $4,500, offering a seamless experience for those seeking an easier drive, especially in demanding off-road conditions or during long road trips.

“In response to enthusiastic requests, we’re reintroducing the 8-speed automatic transmission for V6 Wrangler models, underscoring our commitment to freedom of choice, performance, and versatility for every adventure,” stated Bob Broderdorf, Senior Vice President and Head of Jeep® North America.

The Pentastar V6 delivers 285 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque, giving the Wrangler the strength it needs for both trail and street performance. Paired with the 850RE automatic transmission, the engine maximizes efficiency without sacrificing the rugged capability the Wrangler is known for. This pairing works seamlessly with Jeep’s advanced 4×4 systems, including Command-Trac, Rock-Trac (in part-time or full-time configurations), and Selec-Trac.
