As the continuing semiconductor chip shortage plays havoc with automakers, Stellantis (FCA US LLC) posted its Q4 2021 results with 411,513 units sold or an 18% decrease over Q4 2020. Overall, the automaker managed to sell 1,777,394 vehicles throughout 2021, down just 2% over 2020.
“2021 had unique challenges driven by the various supply chain issues, but our dealers didn’t let that slow them down, and we’re proud of their sales performance,” said U.S. Head of Sales Jeff Kommor. “As we head into the new year, demand for our vehicles continues to be strong and our inventory is improving. We anticipate a continuation of the robust demand and sales volumes into 2022 with our existing and new products, which are backed up by the industry accolades across our brand portfolio, including the Grand Wagoneer, Wagoneer, Ram 1500, and the new Jeep® Grand Cherokee (WL).”
Jeep® –
The Jeep brand’s retail sales were up 1% year over year, despite being down 19% in total. The brand was led by Jeep Grand Cherokee (most importantly the all-new three-row Jeep Grand Cherokee L). The Jeep Wrangler also saw its total sales rise 2% to 204,610 vehicles. The Wrangler recorded its best retail sales year since 2018. The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4xe, the first-ever electrified Jeep Wrangler, went on sale earlier this year, representing the brand’s start of its electrification strategy to provide new levels of efficiency, environmental responsibility, performance, and capability, on and off the road.
Additionally, Jeep Gladiator recorded its best-ever year in total and retail sales in 2021. Total U.S. sales of the Gladiator increased 16% to 89,712 vehicles in 2021. The Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer continue to gain sales momentum in their first full quarter of sales, selling 7,892 vehicles in Q4.
Jeep did also manage to sell a total of 16 leftover Jeep Patriots for the year (9 in Q4). The Patriot was discontinued from the Jeep lineup after the 2017 model year.

Dodge –
Sales of the Dodge Durango increased 14% year over year; Challenger total sales rose 3% and Charger total sales rose 1% in 2021. The Dodge brand also placed first among mass-market brands in the 2021 J.D. Power APEAL Study™, the only domestic brand ever to place first two years in a row.
Dodge managed to sell a lot of leftover vehicles, due to the ongoing semiconductor shortage. Dodge sold 10 compact Dart sedans (which were discontinued in 2016), with 5 of them coming in Q4 2021. The Dodge Journey and Grand Caravan both continued to sell during 2021, despite being eliminated from the lineup last year with a total of 14,035 Journeys and 3,037 Grand Caravans leaving dealer lots during 2021. FIAT –
Despite eliminating most of its model lineup last year, it wasn’t just the semiconductor shortage that continued a decrease in sales for the FIAT brand in the U.S. The 500X crossover continues to remain the only offering in the brand’s portfolio for the 2022 model year.
The Italian brand was almost non-existent in the U.S. for 2021, posting lower numbers than some third-world countries’ output of the FIAT brand. Leading the way was, of course, the 500X, however, the 124 Spider which was discontinued after 2020 sold just 229 fewer units during 2021.

The Alfa Romeo brand posted a 33% decrease for the Q4 2021 period, over the same time in 2020. Unfortunately, the Giulia sedan dropped 41% in Q4 and 7% overall for the year. Leading the way for the brand was of course the Stelvio with 10,539 units sold for the year.

The end of the year results has shown us that those leftover units that have sat on dealer lots for the past few seasons, help play a role for the brands during the semiconductor shortage.
