FCA What’s Behind: Season 2, Episode 1 – The Engine Revolution:
A Look At FCA's Engine Technology Heading Towards Electric...
There were a lot of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) fans, who enjoyed the company’s “What’s Behind” documentary series. So much so, that FCA has decided to continue the series for 2020. For the first episode of the second season, FCA gives a brief history of one of its most popular engine families in the European market and the technology learned, from it to the latest generation of hybrid powertrains that meet the needs global across several of the company’s brands.
From the Fiat Mefistofele and its 6-cylinder engine which, nearly a century ago, reached speeds in excess of 230 kph (143 mph) to the highly-successful FIRE engine which has sold more than 30 million units, and from the common rail to the FireFly, FCA has more than a century of innovation behind it and today faces a new challenge – to create the sustainable propulsion systems of the future while enhancing the performance and efficiency customers have come to expect, including via new propulsion solutions.
The current FCA range includes Mild-Hybrid versions of small cars like the Fiat Panda and 500 Hybrids, where weight, footprint, and cost are critical elements. Plug-in Hybrids offer “pure electric” mode without sacrificing performance on or even off-road like the new Jeep® Renegade and Compass 4xe models. Or Full Electric for the new urban mobility and to create a better future like the next-generation Fiat 500.
