DS Automobiles Expands Its PHEV Offerings For Its Flagship DS 9 Sedan!

New E-TENSE 250 Package, Adds Greater Performance, Better Mileage, & Lower CO2 Emissions...

Stellantis’ DS brand has had an electrification strategy in place since the brand was launched in 2014. With the arrival of its DS 9 in 2020, DS Automobiles’ full-size sedan has been making a name for itself in both the European and Asian marketplaces thanks to a lineup that includes both gasoline and gasoline/plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains. Now that 2022 is almost here, DS is ready to welcome another new PHEV setup for the DS 9.

The DS 9 E-TENSE 250 introduces a 200 horsepower PureTech four-cylinder engine accompanied by an 80kW (110 horsepower) electric motor. A new 15.6kWh battery, with the same number of cells as the 2021 DS 9 E-TENSE 225 model, enables the driver to go 43 miles (70 kilometers) in the city and up to 38 miles (61 kilometers) in mixed driving conditions, according to the WLTP test cycle. A 7.4kW onboard charger allows the DS 9 E-TENSE 250 to charge from 0 to 100% in about 2 hours, 23 minutes.

Thanks to its electric motor system, the DS 9 E-TENSE 250 can drive up to speeds of 84 mph (135 km/h) on electricity alone. When paired with the gasoline four-cylinder engine, the car can reach its electronically limited top speed of 149 mph (240 km/h). The new powertrain also lets the DS 9’s CO2 emissions be reduced to just 26g/km while providing a fuel consumption rating of 214 mpg (1.1 liter/100km).

Two trim levels will be available in France. The first is the PERFORMANCE LINE +, which starts at €58,000 (or about $65,621.20 USD). That package includes Black Alcantara® and leather seats with Carmine and Gold stitching, Alcantara covered center console and dash, crystal inserts under the central touchscreen, embossed aluminum DS PERFORMANCE LINE badge on the instrument panel, and perforated full-grain leather multi-function steering wheel.

On the exterior, the PERFORMANCE LINE + gets chrome badges on the doors, chrome “WINGS” and trunk strip on the rear of the vehicle, and a Gloss Black grille with the PERFORMANCE LINE logo. A set of 19-inch Black “MONACO” aluminum wheels with Carmine center caps are also fitted to enhance the exterior look.

The second trim is the RIVOLI + model. That package starts at €60,900 (or about $68,902.26 USD). The RIVOLI + combines quality materials with diamond-shaped premium trim. Three different interiors can be chosen. Basalt Black Leather is made from grain leather or OPÉRA with, as options, two colors of Nappa leather, characterized by Rubis Red or Black watchstrap upholstery seats.

The elegance of OPÉRA is illustrated through the use of Nappa leather on the seats front and rear, the center console, the door panels and completely covering the dashboard. The premium central rear armrest and the adjustable Lounge head restraints complete the comfort offered by the rear seats. The steering wheel, the gear shifter knob, and the grab handles are also covered in leather. Aluminum accents can be found on the pedals and the center console, while the headliner, sun visors, and rear window area are finished in Alcantara® with “pearl” stitching inspired by French high fashion.

Of course, the DS 9 is loaded with the same Level 2 semi-autonomy and safety technology we have come to love in most Stellantis vehicles.

While there is an available all-wheel-drive (AWD) E-TENSE 360 model, the DS 9 E-TENSE 250 is only available in front-wheel-drive (FWD). The DS 9 is based on the EMP2 architecture that underpins other Stellantis vehicles like Peugeot 508 and Citroën C5X crossover.

The DS brand could consider, along with other Stellantis brands, exposure of their product line to the North American market. Seductive thought. That consideration and actualization might be best accomplish through clever rebadging of those products. In particular, and of critical value, the DS 9 sedan would match perfectly with Chrysler as a very attractive new vehicle for that brand in its defined and existing market and become, in a single stroke, a conduit for Stellantis to recoup development costs, expand markets and support a corporate brand partnership that is “a natural” arrangement of equals. Since DS will share a common platform, the different execution by DS of that platform arrangement could translate with economic offsetting directly to Chrysler. It could be built right on the Charger/ Challenger assembly line with DS developed components from suspension, technical architectures and basic styling characteristics and design elements. The savings would be significant and frankly, the French influenced engineering outcome could claim for its team a psychological presence on North America though it’s adopted partner. It can even be called the Chrysler DS 9. Works for me.

I'm ok with bringing something new for Chrysler products, but it can't just be a rebadge IMO. Chrysler styling needs to be maintained (whatever that is now)

Oh, yes absolutely I agree. It is amazing what a front clip, tail lights, accessories, fine tuning and messaging can do to created two executions from one source. The basic lines are beautiful and functionally there, but these nuanced creative and clever changes make the differences profound and invisible. Do you like to Chrysler DS9 moniker? Sort of a concession to pride in product to those behind the scenes.i kind of dig it.

I don't think its worth it for a sedan in this market, but a crossover or SUV for sure if it would make sense financially.

I would also think that it needs to be a true "Chrysler" nameplate vs. a letter/number combo
