Dragstrip DNA: 1962 Dodge Dart Ram Charger 413 Up for Auction

One of Just 32 Factory-Built Max Wedge Monsters, This Rare Dart is a SoCal Drag Racing Legend

If you’re a Mopar fan or a sucker for early ‘60s drag cars, there’s a seriously rare piece of muscle car history up for grabs on BringATrailer.com: a 1962 Dodge Dart Ram Charger 413 Two-Door Sedan. This isn’t just any old Dart—it’s one of just 32 examples originally factory-equipped with the legendary 413CI Max Wedge V8 and a push-button A727 TorqueFlite three-speed automatic.

Delivered new to Wegge Motors in Pasadena, California, this Dart didn’t just sit around looking pretty—it spent its early years tearing up the drag strips of Southern California. After years of bouncing between states like Nebraska, Illinois, and eventually Florida, the car found a long-term home with its current owner in 2009. Now it’s ready for a new chapter.

Under the hood is a proper Mopar monster. The 6.8-liter (413 cubic-inch) Max Wedge V8 sports dual Carter 3447 four-barrel carbs on a short-ram intake, pumping out over 400 horsepower. While the original block was swapped early in its life, this engine still brings the heat with a high-lift cam, 11.25:1 compression pistons, and equal-length Davis Headers that scream through a dual exhaust with capped cutouts. It even had an oil change in late 2024, although the seller mentions a small leak at the exhaust-header gasket.

Outside, it’s painted in its original Cobalt Blue Poly (EE-1), though it was resprayed decades ago. The vintage-style white lettering mimics its early drag racing livery, complete with Blair’s Speed Shop graphics. A hood scoop, tow-bar brackets, offset headlights, and stacked taillights complete the menacing look. Sure, there are some paint chips and imperfections—but let’s be honest, they only add to the car’s street cred.

The rolling stock is pure business: staggered-width 15-inch wheels with fresh BFGoodrich Silvertown rubber up front and drag slicks out back. The suspension’s all heavy-duty too, with torsion bars up front and leaf springs out back. Braking is handled by classic 11-inch drums at all four corners.

Inside, it’s old-school racing through and through. The front bench seat’s been re-covered in blue and gray vinyl, while the rear seat’s long gone—replaced by a bolt-in roll bar. A two-spoke steering wheel (with a cracked rim, no less) sits in front of a column-mounted Sun tach, a Stewart-Warner oil pressure gauge, and a big sweeping 120-mph speedo. The tach was updated to solid-state by Williamson’s Instruments in Arkansas, and a coolant gauge has been added under the dash.

The push-button TorqueFlite automatic was upgraded by none other than Art Carr, and it sends power to an 8.75-inch rear end with 3.91:1 gears. A patched floor hole is visible in the photo gallery, and the neutral-safety switch could use some fine-tuning—but that’s nothing a weekend wrench session can’t fix.

The auction includes some real gems for collectors: a broadcast sheet, a copy of the original window sticker ($3,153.70 new!), display boards, vintage photos, notes, extra tires, and even a tow bar. The Dart is being sold with a clean Montana title registered to the seller’s LLC.

With just 4,250 miles showing on the five-digit odometer, this car is a true survivor with serious drag strip credentials. If you’re into rare factory muscle, don’t sleep on this one—bidding ends Tuesday, April 22 at 3:57 p.m. EDT.
