AUCTION: 38k-Mile Modified 1999 Dodge Durango Shelby SP 360

Before There Was The Trackhawk, There Was This...

In the world of automotive rarities, the 1999 Dodge Durango Shelby SP 360 stands out as a true gem. This unique SUV was born out of a collaboration between aftermarket conversion company Performance West Group and automotive legend Carroll Shelby. Only about 300 of these special vehicles were ever produced, and one of them, the 37th in the lineup, has recently emerged on BringATrailer.com for auction.

Visually, the Durango Shelby SP 360 boasts distinctive features such as front and rear fascias, a ram-air hood, and aftermarket side sills, setting it apart from the standard first-generation Durango. It also comes with 17-inch chrome aluminum wheels as part of the package. Most of the SP 360 models were painted to replicate the beautiful Shelby-inspired 1996 Dodge Viper GTS Coupe, adding to its unique allure.

Under the hood, the SP 360 originally came equipped with a supercharged version of the 5.9-liter (360 cubic inch) MAGNUM V8 engine. The Performance West Group added a Keene Bell Blowzilla twin-screw supercharger, headers, a ram-air intake system, Optimizer CPU, and a 2.5-inch Kenne Bell stainless steel cat-back exhaust, which brought the power output to 360 horsepower and 414 lb.-ft. of torque.

However, the previous owner replaced the original engine with a modified version of the 360 MAGNUM engine, featuring a Procharger supercharger, Comp camshaft, Kent Cole-ported Mopar aluminum cylinder heads, JE 8.5:1 forged pistons, Mopar M1 intake manifold, MSD ignition box, JBA headers, and Mopar finned valve covers. This upgrade boosted the power output to 414 horsepower and 442 lb.-ft. of torque at the wheels, making it a formidable performer.

To handle the increased power and improve handling, the Durango SP 360 features a re-engineered suspension from DJM with modified casters, camber, recalibrated springs, shocks, and steering. The vehicle’s ride height was lowered by 3 inches for a more aggressive stance. The optional braking system includes 6-piston calipers and cross-drilled and ventilated rotors from Stillen, providing ample stopping power.

Inside the cabin, the SP 360 exudes a sense of luxury and sportiness. The front and rear Cerullo bucket seats are upholstered in Grey leather with Black inserts, featuring Carroll Shelby’s signature embroidered on the backrests. Carbon fiber-effect appliques adorn the dashboard, front and rear center consoles, and door panels. The SUV also offers three-row seating, air-conditioning, cruise control, and an AM/FM Cassette stereo. The entertainment options include a fold-down TV screen, rear climate controls, and a VHS player in the cargo area, catering to nostalgia with its 1990s vibe.

The 1999 Dodge Durango Shelby SP 360 was originally sold by Ed Murdock Dodge of Lavonia, Georgia, and comes with a clean West Virginia title. According to the Carfax report, it has a history free of accidents or damage and has been driven in Georgia, Virginia, and West Virginia. The vehicle also underwent a Manufacturer’s Safety Recall related to the fuel tank straps, which was addressed in February 2000. The seller is offering additional documentation, including GTS headlight and taillight covers, a dyno sheet, a 1998 sales invoice, and a comprehensive set of records.
