In August last year, Dodge introduced the Hornet GT GLH Concept, paying homage to the high-performance Dodge Omni GLH produced in the mid-1980s. The concept showcased Direct Connection upgrades that enhance the performance of the vehicle, and now Dodge has unveiled its 2024 Hornet R/T GLH Concept, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the crossover, taking performance to new heights.
The GLH in the name stands for “Goes Like Hell,” and it’s a reference to the high-performance heritage of the Dodge brand. The Hornet R/T GLH Concept offers a glimpse into what Direct Connection can achieve with modifications such as a lowering kit and an unrestricted exhaust system.
Dodge’s in-house tuners, Direct Connection, have focused on improving the handling dynamics of the Hornet R/T GLH Concept, and it features a lowering kit with new front and rear springs, resulting in a lower center of gravity and enhanced cornering dynamics. Both the R/T GLH and GT GLH also feature an unrestricted exhaust system that promises to deliver a more muscular engine sound, along with special GLH graphics that include black racing stripes and a unique Red Hornet badge.
The PHEV powertrain of the Hornet R/T GLH Concept combines a turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine with an rear axle-mounted e-motor, producing an impressive combined output of 288 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque. The Hornet GT GLH Concept, which features the same suspension modifications, wheels, and accents, but with an internal combustion-only powertrain, makes 268 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque.
Direct Connection stage kits for the Dodge Hornet are stackable performance upgrades that enable enthusiasts to achieve their performance goals with upgrades to the engine and transmission calibrations. The Direct Connection Stage Kit boosts the Hornet GT and includes a Direct Connection Engine Control Unit (ECU) Tuner, a unique calibration code keychain, increased boost calibration, and transmission calibration.
Dodge has not revealed the price and availability of these GLH packages yet, but the Hornet R/T GLH Concept and Hornet GT GLH Concept offer a promising look at what Direct Connection has in store for performance enthusiasts. These concepts show that Dodge is continuing to push the boundaries of performance in the compact crossover segment, and the GLH name is a nod to the brand’s high-performance heritage.
