Meet The All-New 2026 Jeep® Recon Moab 4xe

Jeep's All-New Adventure Off-Roader Makes Its Official Debut

Jeep® just dropped one of its biggest reveals of the year at the Los Angeles Auto Show, pulling the covers off the 2026 Recon (EJ). Now that the curtains have been pulled back, the world finally gets a full look at Jeep’s first fully electric, Trail Rated SUV engineered specifically for real off-road duty—not just electric vehicle (EV) novelty.

I take it that the CEO's on the Jeep side of Stellantis must have missed the public flogging and crucifixion that DODGE JUST WENT THROUGH FOR RELEASING AN ALL ELECTRIC VEHICLE FIRST ON THIS SAME PLATFORM WITHOUT HAVING AN ICE OPTION FOR PEOPLE TO ACTUALLY BUY!!!!!! Did they miss the memo that Carlos Tavares is gone so we can go back to actually making vehicles with powertrains that people want as well as EVs and we can release them first? Did they not see the new Ram Symbol of Protest on the sides of the Hemi trucks? What happened?

Let's be real here. Beautiful design, really is, just like the Wagoneer S. Both vehicles are poorly named and need ICE and hybrid variants, but that goes for the entire Jeep lineup.
New Cherokee - should be Jeep Renegade
New Recon - should be Jeep Cherokee
Wagoneer S- should be Grand Cherokee
Jeep Grand Cherokee - should be Grand Wagoneer and have only the 3-row option.

All four vehicles should be on the STLA: Large platform with three powertrain choices
Hurricane-4 ICE powertrain w/ ZF 8hp Gen-4 in AWD config
Hurricane-4 Hybrid Powertrain w/ ZF 8hp Gen-4 EVO Plug in hybrid config
400v dual motor 650hp AWD powertrain

above that Jeep's frame vehicles should be
full size Grand Wagoneer - permanently discontinued
Wrangler - 4 door only, Hurricane I-6 powertrains only, AWD, no hybrid, no V8 options
Gladiator- Same as Wrangler

All of this and Jeep needs a massive customization catalog for all of this.

The Recon will be going up against the Scout which offers an EREV drivetrain. The Audi version of the Scout is rumored to be very Range Rover like and will also offer an EREV option.

The Recon has the looks down straight. It seems Jeep didn't cheap out on the suspension either. Unfortunately it has arrived with yesterday's battery pack. I don't blame Jeep for debuting the Recon with the battery electric drive. The new Hurricane 4 isn't available yet. The 1.6 liter would make a great range extender, but the priority for a range extended EV is with the Grand Cherokee and Ram REV models.

I'm intrigued by the gear reduction on the rear e-axle, it sounds very much like the setup on the new Euro Compass.

My first thought when I saw the doors off was, “How many thousands of dollars is it going to take to repair that B-pillar the first time somebody snags that door hinge on a tree along a trail?”

250 miles of range in perfect conditions, means 175ish during winter. And it STARTS at $67k? Are they kidding?

Stellantis might as well go ahead and order the tomb stone for this ride. Maybe they can buy the burial plot right between the Hornet and the Charger Daytona while it’s still available.

The opinions on the Racon, predictably, will be many and varied. I will keep mine brief since readers will be overwhelmed with everyone’s sincere responses.
Positive: Jeep did an amazing job on the Recon, confidence confirmed on their talented development team.
Negative: It’s all electric only. As stated already, like the Daytona, it will find few buyers, some indeed, but not enough.
Advice: Get the hybrid from the Cherokee out there to augment its electrification credentials and the Hurricane Six Pack combo from the Charger or the turbo four from the Grand Cherokee to have any chance of selling this new Jeep. Ditto for the Cherokee on engines. I bet they know all this already, don’t you ?

Lots here. Sure to generate responses. Mine is No on the Grand Wagoneer, a model with huge potential and the right engineered platform to excel. A keeper.

Indeed for the Grand Wagoneer. Jeep is on the cusp of a generational advance in drivetrain technology with the range extended EV, and it's available on both wheelbases of the Grand Wag.

The Stellantis regime change started a year ago, so a lot of product was still in the pipeline when counter revolution began. Customers want more choices, not less. Right now the range of choices is limited because there is a need to build domestic production facilities. Part of those facility improvements is the mid-size Ram pickup going into Toledo North with the Wranglers. Not offering a hybrid option or four cylinders on the Wrangler would seriously limit the mid-size Ram's market penetration. Economies of scale is needed to keep prices low, because commercial and fleet buyers often choose four cylinder engines and hybrids.

I mentioned previously that the new battery in the Cherokee hybrid is a big question mark because it is a new technology. I can't help but notice that the condensed battery size would be a good fit in the two-door Wrangler. Jeep needs to combine that with the ZF 8-speed hybrid transmission using the internal e-motor . The same thing could be done with the four door Wrangler, Gladiator, and mid-size Ram.

Much needed for EU.... and should be popular with Coastal populations.

Looks great and would stack up well against the Ford Bronco if it had an ICE powertrain. I'm sure Jeep is already working on that, though.

Or even an EREV. Scout is prepping an EREV right now that will compete directly in this space, and they are promising a $60k starting price.

If you're standing there looking at the Recon vs. the Traveler and the Traveler is $7k less money with 300 miles more range, which are you taking home?

Agree, global appeal is obvious. Have at it Euro buyers.
The Recon is the obvious choice for off road “wanna be” urban folk and suburban groupies. Have at it guys.
The Wrangler is the trail master, the Recon its little brother. The one consistent point running through this strand is that this fantastic Recon design obviously needs an ICE option and a hybrid option. Agree, they must be in the works, those options will quadruple sales, no doubt. Have at it Jeep engineers, it’s obvious.

IMO this should have even lower appeal in Europe than the Wrangler.

STLA completely misunderstood European market plus it seems that here is rising oppression to plug in vehicles and more important this is the game in which will Chinese prevail due to pricing.

Answer is... Stop plug ins.
