EU Backpedals on 2035 ICE “Ban” With a New 90% CO₂ Target

EU Backpedals on 2035 ICE “Ban” With a New 90% CO₂ Target

A Big Rules Rewrite, Not A Full U-Turn

Europe just put a major “reset button” on one of the most talked-about automotive deadlines in the world: the EU’s 2035 requirement that all new cars and vans be zero-emissions at the tailpipe. In a new proposal that still needs approval from EU governments and the European Parliament, the European Commission would replace the effective 2035 zero-emissions requirement with a target calling for a 90% cut in CO₂ emissions from 2021 levels instead of 100%.

I wonder if there will be any spill over to our shores from this. The Jeep Recon and Wagoneer S were introduced as pure battery electric to satisfy the EU regulators. Perhaps this rules rewrite may spur the Stellantis suits to equip these models with ICE range extenders. With all the advancements in range extended EV technology these past few years, Jeep has the opportunity to turn these losers into winners.

It might be too late for Abarth, the EU regulations killed that brand.

With Chevron, Valaro, and 76 all pulling out of California by 28' and closing their refineries....... the people of the People Republic of California likely will still need the Recon and Wagoneer.

How freaken hard is it to product plan when you regulators are Schizophrenic ....... yes the market realities are against EVs as a direct replacement. Yes you likely killing hundreds of thousands of local jobs for jobs in Asia............ But that isn't new.... Ya knew that from the start. Let the EV market develop organically and it would be better for everyone.
