Jeep® is stepping into the future with the upcoming Jeep Recon (EJ), an all-electric SUV aimed at delivering both rugged capability and everyday practicality. Designed during the pandemic by the Auburn Hills Product Design Office (PDO), the Recon blends the classic Jeep spirit with modern electric vehicle (EV) technology.
Its Not A Wrangler –
Unlike the body-on-frame Wrangler Unlimited 4xe, the Jeep Recon is a unibody SUV, sharing its STLA Large architecture with the all-electric Dodge Charger Daytona and Jeep Wagoneer S. This design choice gives the Recon a striking resemblance to the iconic 1984–2001 Jeep Cherokee (XJ), offering a modern twist on a beloved classic.
Set to launch in Q3 2025, the Recon will be produced at the Stellantis Toluca Assembly Plant in Mexico. Initially available in North America, the Recon will roll out to global markets, including Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
Powerful Electric Capabilities –
According to our sources the Recon will use Stellantis’ G2500 Electric Drive Modules (EDMs), delivering outstanding performance. The dual G2500 EDM setup will offer between 450 and 600 horsepower with standard four-wheel-drive (4×4). These are the same EDMs used on the new Dodge Charger Daytona R/T and Scat Pack.
The Recon will be powered by a 400-volt architecture at launch, with future upgrades potentially leveraging Stellantis’ advanced EV technologies.
Initially, the Recon will come with a single-speed transmission, but Stellantis has patented an innovative multi-speed EV transmission called the “eRupt.” While this advanced gearbox will debut on the 800-volt Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Banshee, it could eventually find its way into off-road-focused vehicles like the Recon.
Three Trim Levels to Suit Your Lifestyle –
Our sources have also indicated that the new Recon will debut with three trims, each catering to different needs:
- Willys – Entry-level model offers tough and rugged style with a nod to classic Jeep heritage.
- Overland – A perfect for those who mix adventure with luxury.
- Moab – This model is designed for hardcore off-roaders, featuring 17-inch wheels, rugged 285/70R17 Nexen Roadian ATX tires, and a slight lift for added ground clearance.
Open-Air Freedom –
The Jeep Recon stays true to the brand’s adventurous roots by offering an exhilarating open-air experience. Designed with versatility in mind, the Recon features removable doors, allowing drivers to embrace the great outdoors fully.
Additionally, a power-retractable roof option provides a seamless way to enjoy open skies, whether you’re navigating rugged trails or cruising through the city. This design ensures the Recon delivers the freedom and connection to nature that Jeep fans have come to expect.
Hybrid Variant on the Horizon? –
In response to the growing resistance to EVs in the U.S. and parts of Europe, Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa has hinted at a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) variant of the Recon. This model would likely use a 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four engine paired with hybrid technology. This hybrid powerplant is expected to make its debut on the 2026 Jeep Cherokee (KM), which will also be produced at the Toluca Assembly Plant our sources say.
With a proven track record of mild-hybrid Jeep models like the Avenger, Renegade, and Compass e-HYBRID in Europe, the Recon Hybrid could attract buyers seeking versatility without the need for charging infrastructure.
Pricing and Release Timeline –
The Recon is expected to debut in the mid-$50,000 range in the U.S., though pricing may vary based on federal EV tax credits. Initial sales will focus on the North American market, followed by Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Jeep plans to have the first Recon models in showrooms by late 2025.
With its bold design, advanced technology, and commitment to off-road capability, the Jeep Recon is poised to make a impact in the electrified off-road SUV market.
