Over the years, Ram produced a number of Heavy Duty long-hauling concept trucks. But only one captured an attitude as well as function: the 2007 Ram 5500 BFT Concept.
BFT? Yes, it stands for “Big F^&*’n Truck”! Designed to be the ultimate workhorse pickup, the Ram BFT Concept started life as a 2007 Ram 5500 Chassis Cab with a 160-inch wheelbase.
Instead of putting a spacious Crew Cab configuration on the chassis, the Auburn Hills design studio fitted the truck with a Regular Cab instead. This allowed the Mopar Underground team to create a custom 10-foot dually box setup for the truck. The added length of the box allows for added storage in the box even if a fifth-wheel trailer was attached.
To help offset the truck’s bold tough f^&*’n looks, the design team equipped the truck with a 6-inch suspension lift kit from Superlift. Talk about a commanding driving position on the highway. The BFT Concept also features a set of massive 22.5-inch Alcoa 10-lug semi-truck wheels, to help enhance the truck’s big rig looks.
Under the hood, is a 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel inline-six engine modified by Banks Power. Unfortunately, Ram never released the Banks-enhanced Cummins official power ratings. But it is for sure higher than the Cummins stock numbers of 325 horsepower and 650 lb.-ft. (881 N•m) of torque at the time. The Cummins was mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Like the 2023 Ram Heavy Duty models, the BFT Concept also featured telescoping mirrors. The trucks also featured a carryover performance hood with air intake from the 2006 Ram SRT-10.
The BFT Concept was the brainchild of famed designer Scott Krugger, who designed the exterior of the 2013 SRT Viper and is now Head of Dodge Exterior Design, and Mark Allen, who is the Head of Design for Jeep®.
While Ram has shown more ‘Moparized’ concepts like the Ram 1500 Rebel OTG Concept in recent years, we wish the design studio would build more outrageous concepts like the BFT Concept once again.
These outrageous concepts, help push the design boundaries for the pickup market, especially since we are seeing so many bland electric pickups (other than the extremely bold Tesla Cybertruck). Hopefully, we will see the upcoming all-electric Ram Revolution Concept due out next month, and make a bold statement in its design.
