The Dodge Viper may have been discontinued after the 2017 model year, but the American supercar continues to hold a special place in many automotive enthusiasts’ hearts. Over the past couple of months, we have seen numerous pre-owned Vipers go across the auction block and go for huge amounts. It seems that a ton of Viper models, no matter the generation, have been hitting the interwebs for sale hoping to get big dollars for them.
One car that caught our eye, on the online automotive auction site “Bring A Trailer“, was this 2017 Dodge Viper ACR Extreme. The fifth-generation or “GEN V” Dodge Viper, continues to be one of the most beautiful American coupes ever built and the ACR Extreme version turns that sexy-looking coupe into one of the best factory track cars money can buy.
The optional Extreme Aero Package produced the highest aerodynamic downforce of any production car at the time. During its on-track testing, SRT engineers experienced downforce numbers of 1,200+ lbs. at 150 mph and 1,700 lbs. at the car’s top speed of 177 mph. The car produced about 12% more downforce over the base ACR on the straightaways and 21% more downforce during aggressive cornering.
The Extreme Aero Package included a huge (1,876-mm wide) adjustable dual-element rear wing – which is 62 % larger (in top surface area) than Viper TA 2.0 package. The Extreme Aero Package also added a rear carbon fiber diffuser, unique SRT hood with removable louvers, detachable extension for the front splitter, and four dive planes. The Extreme Aero rear wing was specifically designed for airflow around the Viper’s body. It stood taller, sat further rearward, and featured unique end-plates and gurney lip to produce maximum downforce while minimizing straight line drag. The Package ultimately delivered more than 3 times the downforce of the popular Viper TA 2.0 Package.
The Viper ACR featured Brembo® Carbon Ceramic Matrix brakes for optimum braking performance with unprecedented brake fade resistance, and greater handling capability through reduced un-sprung weight. The system used 390-millimeter (15.4-inch) two-piece front rotors and 360-millimeter (14.2-inch) two-piece rear rotors. Front brakes used six-piston Brembo® calipers while the rear brakes used four-piston calipers.
Viper ACRs were fitted with Kumho® Ecsta V720 high-performance tires designed specifically for the car with unique tread pattern and compounds for the front and the rear. During development testing, those tires produced lap times that were 1.5 seconds faster than off-road only race tires. The low-profile front tires measure 295/25/19 and were mounted on wider 11-inch wide wheels and when combined with the 355/30/19 rear tires provide the largest combined tire patch available on any production car at the time.
The car also featured ABS and 5-mode Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system (Full-On, Sport, Track, Rain, and Full-Off) and was specifically tuned for the car to take into account the extra grip provided by the Extreme Aero and Kumho tire packages.
Aluminum-bodied, double-adjustable coil-over Bilstein race shocks were designed specifically for the Viper ACR and worked in conjunction with ride height adjustment for optimal control of weight transfer and handling performance. Each shock provided independent 10-way rebound and compression adjustability. The suspension package also provided more than 3 inches of ride height adjustment.
At the heart of the 2017 Dodge Viper ACR was the handcrafted, all-aluminum 8.4-liter V10 engine, rated at 645 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque. Power reached the pavement through the standard Tremec TR6060 6-speed manual transmission.
Needless to say, the Viper ACR Extreme, was the closest thing you could get to a full-factory street-legal manual race car.
This example is being sold by Graham Rahal Performance in Brownsburg, Indiana. The car is painted in beautiful Gunmetal Pearl with the ACR signature red and black stripes. Inside, the interior is fitted with black leather and Alcantara upholstery. Carbon trim pieces outline the cockpit, as does the Header Red seatbelts.
With 530 original miles on the odometer, the car has just reached its breaking-in point. The car was first delivered to Gerry Wood Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge of Salisbury, North Carolina, and it spent time in Connecticut before the selling dealer’s recent acquisition. This Viper ACR Extreme is offered in Indiana with a window sticker, a car cover, removed factory parts, manufacturer’s literature, a clean Carfax report, and a clean Connecticut title.
Currently, the bid for the car sits at $241,000 USD as of the writing of this article. The factory window sticker has a total MSRP of $153,535 with all the options and original destination charges.
