A custom 1932 Chrysler CD8 Roadster, known as “Butter Cup,” is scheduled to be auctioned at Mecum Las Vegas 2024 on Friday, October 18th. This vehicle is notable for its combination of historical significance, performance, and craftsmanship.

A Unique Heritage –

The Chrysler Eight was introduced in 1931, filling the gap between the base-model Six and the luxury Imperial Eight. Drawing inspiration from the Cord L29, the CD8 featured elegant styling and was offered in various body types, including sedans, coupes, and roadsters. Built on a 124-inch wheelbase, this model made waves in the racing scene, with roadster variants competing in prestigious events like the 1931 24 Hours of Le Mans and finishing third at Spa shortly after.

This particular CD8 Roadster is a true gem, retaining its original steel body and front end. Unlike many modified vehicles that often rely on fiberglass replicas, this Chrysler boasts its original sheet metal, showcasing its unique heritage.

Impressive Performance –

Under the hood, “Butter Cup” houses a rare 5.4-liter (331 cubic-inch) FirePower HEMI® V8 engine, originally from a 1955 Chrysler Imperial. Known for its rarity, this engine was produced between 1951 and 1955 and is much harder to find than the more common big blocks from the muscle car era. The engine is enhanced with a 6-71 blower, significantly increasing its power output, making this roadster an exhilarating ride.

The vehicle is also equipped with Carter carburetors, famed for their racing legacy in the 1960s. These carburetors are a rarity today, having been discontinued after Edelbrock acquired the brand in the early 1990s. The owner’s effort in sourcing and tuning these components adds another layer of history to this impressive build.

A Passionate Ownership –

The current owner, a dedicated Mopar enthusiast, acquired this Chrysler CD8 by trading a cherished 1968 Charger. He has invested in several upgrades, including a new radiator, to keep the engine cool during spirited drives. With over 600 horsepower available, the owner cautiously approaches the car’s performance. He describes the thrill of reaching 60 mph as “scary,” but the excitement of piloting such a historical vehicle is irreplaceable.

Classic Features and Modern Touches –

Among the standout features of the Chrysler CD8 is its original rumble seat, which offers a nostalgic touch and an extra seat for passengers. The owner has also customized the car, opting for black accents over the original chrome to give it a modern twist. Wider tires (30 x 21 x 15 inches) have been added for improved grip and performance, enhancing the driving experience.

The car has not only been a source of enjoyment for the owner but has also opened doors within the automotive community. At a recent car show, the President of the Chrysler of America Car Club personally invited him, recognizing the significance of this unique Chrysler.

Conclusion –
