With the 2023 model year marking an end to the modern-day HEMI-powered Dodge Challenger, one ride that represented the beginning of the era is going up for auction this Friday.
This HEMI Orange-painted 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 made its debut mid-year with a production run of 6,400 units for the U.S. market (500 for the Canadian market) and would ultimately lead to a performance renaissance for the Dodge brand.
On Monday, December 3rd, 2007 Dodge began taking deposits for its third-generation Dodge Challenger. This was almost two months before the car would be officially unveiled at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show. Available in three color choices (Bright Silver, Brilliant Black, and of course, HEMI Orange), the cars came as well-equipped SRT8 spec’d units. Each car came with 20-inch x 9-inch aluminum SRT design wheels wrapped in 245/45ZR20 all-season rubber, AM/FM 6-disc CD/DVD/MP3/Sirius Satellite Radio head unit with a 13-speaker KICKER SRT audio system, and Dark Slate Grey colored leather bucket seats with HEMI Orange seatback accents.
Only three options were available at the time. The optional MyGIG multimedia infotainment system with navigation ($890), 245/45ZR20 front, 255/45ZR20 rear performance tires ($50), and a power sunroof ($950). Ultimately, the car was set at $37,995 (excluding $675 for destination and $2,100 for a gas guzzler tax). That price also included a pass to the SRT Track Experience.
Production of the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 began on Thursday, May 8th, 2008 at the Brampton Assembly Plant just outside of Toronto.
This particular vehicle is one of those cars that left the assembly line fully-loaded with all of the options checked.
Under the hood, was the 6.1-liter (370 cubic-inch) SRT HEMI V8 delivering 425 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque. It was mated to a Mercedes-sourced W5A580 5-speed automatic. This one has been fiited with a HURST ball shifter. The odometer shows only 8,140 miles in the car’s 14 years of existence.
