Alfa Romeo Junior Ibrida Spotted Testing in Italy

Alfa Romeo's First Hybrid Crossover Spotted, Key to Future Electrification...

The Alfa Romeo Junior Ibrida, the latest addition to Alfa Romeo’s lineup, was recently spotted testing in Italy by automotive photographer Walter Vayr (@GabetzSPYUnit). The Ibrida is the mild-hybrid version of Alfa Romeo’s newest subcompact B-segment crossover, which has already generated positivity for the Italian brand thanks to its blend of style, technology, and performance.

A Fresh Look for Alfa Romeo –

The Junior is designed as a successor to the Alfa Romeo MiTo and Giulietta, filling a crucial spot in the brand’s lineup as their smallest vehicle. Built on Stellantis’ Common Modular Platform (CMP), which it shares with models like the Jeep® Avenger and Fiat 600, the Junior aims to offer an accessible yet distinctive option in the highly competitive B-segment crossover market.

Visually, the Junior reflects classic Alfa Romeo styling cues while introducing new design elements. The signature scudetto grille, hidden rear door handles, and “3+3” Adaptive Full LED Matrix headlights contribute to the SUV’s bold aesthetic. The Ibrida version, in particular, features a more traditional grille with the iconic Alfa Romeo script, adding a touch of elegance to its modern look.

Mild-Hybrid Powertrain for the Ibrida –

Under the hood, the Alfa Romeo Junior Ibrida utilizes a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that pairs a turbocharged 1.2-liter (73 cubic-inch) I3 engine with an electric motor integrated into the transmission. This powertrain delivers a combined output of 136 horsepower (102 kW), with the 1.2-liter gasoline engine contributing 115 horsepower and the electric motor adding an additional 28 horsepower.

The hybrid setup is designed for efficiency and smooth driving, particularly in urban environments. The 48-volt system allows the Ibrida to drive in electric mode for over 50% of the time in city driving conditions, including during parking maneuvers and at low speeds. In low-load scenarios, the vehicle can even travel in electric mode at speeds up to 150 km/h (93 mph), making it a versatile option for both city and highway driving.

The 6-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) ensures quick gear changes and seamless transitions between the gasoline engine and electric motor, enhancing the overall driving experience. The powertrain architecture, which also features a Variable Geometry Turbo (VGT), is designed to maximize fuel efficiency and reduce emissions without sacrificing performance.

Vayr’s latest images show the Alfa Romeo Junior Ibrida in several stages of pre-production form, wearing light camouflage to completely uncamouflaged. This suggests that Alfa Romeo is fine-tuning the model before its official launch, which is expected later this year. The Ibrida will serve as a key part of Alfa Romeo’s electrification push alongside fully electric variants like the Junior Elettrica and Veloce.

As Alfa Romeo’s first hybrid SUV, the Junior Ibrida is a significant step in the brand’s efforts to balance performance with sustainability. With its stylish design, advanced hybrid powertrain, and urban-friendly features, the Junior Ibrida is poised to appeal to drivers looking for an efficient, compact SUV that doesn’t compromise driving dynamics.

A Critical Role in Alfa Romeo’s Strategy –

Originally, Alfa Romeo had planned to transition to an all-electric lineup by 2027. However, with a recent decline in sales against electric vehicles (EVs), even in Europe, and the growing popularity of hybrids, the Junior Ibrida now plays an even more critical role in the brand’s future. Its mild-hybrid system allows Alfa Romeo to offer a more balanced and versatile option for consumers who are not yet ready to go fully electric, positioning the Ibrida as a key model in the brand’s evolving strategy toward electrification.
