There is without a doubt that the 2020 Ram 1500 models are the safest pickups the brand has ever produced. Now, the 2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab models have been named a Top Safety Pick+ for 2019, which is the highest rating given by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
“This recognition validates our unrelenting efforts to deliver more value for our customers,” says Reid Bigland, Head of Ram Brand. “The new Ram 1500 has earned many accolades for its capability and design. It is immensely satisfying to have the IIHS recognize our truck for its compelling safety story.”
The new rating applies to 2020 Ram 1500 Crew Cab models produced after May of this year. Those models equipped with adaptive LED projector headlamps that have high-beam assist and Ram’s Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) technology, and Forward Collision Mitigation, were the models given the rating.
With more than 100 available safety and security features, the 2020 Ram 1500 is available with the latest in advanced technology. As part of FCA’s ongoing and continuous efforts to proliferate the most advanced materials engineering, the Ram 1500 frame and body structures feature 98 and 54-percent high-strength steel respectively.
The Ram 1500 features the most advanced frame in the segment with equal impact countermeasures on all configurations. Exclusive splayed and tapered frame rail technology creates a highly efficient energy-absorbing front frame rail structure for all impact modes. Frame-mounted high-strength steel tire blockers are placed at front cab location to redirect the tire outbound in a front-offset impact.
The 2020 Ram 1500 was evaluated in six crash evaluations by the IIHS. Three of those were simulations of frontal impacts and the 2020 Ram 1500 recorded a “good” rating on each, which is the highest possible rating a vehicle can achieve. The results of the other crash test conducted which included inflict damage consistent with a side impact, rear impact, and a rollover, all achieved top honors.
Features like Forward Collision Mitigation earned a “superior” rating. Optional on Ram 1500, this feature boasts sensor-fusion technology, which blends camera capability with radar detection to determine when an impact is imminent. Using Integrated Radar Camera Module (IRCM) to accommodate Forward Collision Mitigation, IRCM consolidates radar and camera components behind the vehicle’s rearview mirror, which not only simplifies their interface but keeps important technology out of harm’s way in the event of minor collisions. When in operation, the system initially warns the driver to take action to avoid a collision. If the driver does not act in a timely manner, the system may activate the vehicle’s brakes if collision risk remains.
Ram’s adaptive LED projector headlamps that have high-beam assist were refined in May, after scoring low due to glare last year. These headlights are found on the Laramie Longhorn and Limited trim levels and because of the refinements got the highest IIHS rating of “good” for the new model year.
