Windsor Assembly Forced To Halt Production Earlier This Week For Shortages!

Sources Say Fuel Tanks Sourced From Mexico The Problem...

Continued supply chain issues halted minivan production at the Stellantis Windsor Assembly Plant this week.

The 4.4 million square foot manufacturing facility located across the river from Detroit, has been severely impacted by the global semiconductor shortage and other supply chain shortages over the past couple of years.

In AutoForecast Solutions LLC’s latest update, the automotive data processing company estimated that 144,400 vehicles were not produced since the supply chain issue started in 2021. That includes an estimated 53,000 units that weren’t produced this year due to downtime.

While Stellantis, nor Unifor stated a reason for the shutdown, our sources at the Windsor plant cited a shortage of fuel tanks for Pacifica all-wheel drive (AWD) models coming from Mexico.

Because there were so many AWD units on the line at the time of the shortage, the line had to be stopped until gas tanks could be sourced for those models. The plant can not simply change orders or pull the models off of the line. Once those AWD models could be built, the plant could simply put a hold on AWD models until supplies are sufficient. At that point, the plant can reinstate the AWD models for production.

Production has since continued. The plant has notified the workforce that they will also be running both shifts on Saturday, November 26th as well.
