This Rare Sassy Grass 1970 Road Runner 440+6 Is Pure Mopar Muscle

One Of Only 222 Automatic V-Code Coupes Heads To Mecum Monterey.

If you’re into rare Mopar muscle and high-impact colors, then this 1970 Plymouth Road Runner should stop you in your tracks. Finished in attention-grabbing Sassy Grass Green (FJ6), this freshly restored “post car” is a true V-Code example packing Chrysler’s legendary 7.2-liter (440 cubic-inch) 6-BBL V8 under the hood. And it’s heading to the Mecum Monterey auction on Saturday, August 16th, 2025.

Back in 1970, the Road Runner was already a hit, but most were ordered with the base 6.3-liter (383-cubic-inch) 4-BBL V8 big-block. Of the 36,861 units built that year, only 1,815 were equipped with the high-performance 440 6-BBL (also known as 440+6) V8. Even more exclusive, just 222 coupes like this one came with the TorqueFlite 727 3-speed automatic transmission. That makes this a needle-in-a-haystack type of Mopar.

The 440+6 wasn’t just marketing fluff—this big-block RB engine was topped with three Holley two-barrel carburetors, pushing 390 horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque. That’s only 35 horses shy of the mighty HEMI, but with better drivability and a whole lot more street cred thanks to the unmistakable sound of those three carbs gulping air under full throttle.

This particular example has undergone a full rotisserie restoration and has logged just 200 miles since completion. The Sassy Grass paint is show-ready and gleams like it just rolled out of the dealership in 1970. Inside, the black vinyl bench seat gives it a no-nonsense sleeper vibe, with silver accent trim adding a bit of flair. A period-correct Tic-Toc-Tach sits front and center in the dash, while a JVC AM/FM/CD system adds a modern touch for cruising tunes.

It rides on color-matched steel wheels with dog-dish hubcaps wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/A white-letter tires, just like you’d want it. A Sure-Grip 8¾-inch rear end helps plant the power, and power steering makes it a bit more enjoyable at slow speeds and in parking lots.

No word yet on whether the engine is numbers-matching, but the VIN confirms its true V-Code status. Even without that confirmation, this is a top-tier example of one of Mopar’s most iconic muscle cars—one that’s bound to grab eyeballs wherever it goes.

With its combination of rarity, color, and condition, Mecum expects this Road Runner to fetch between $140,000 and $160,000 when it crosses the block. Considering how scarce these cars are—especially in this spec—that estimate might end up being conservative.

If you’re in the market for a high-profile piece of Mopar history, this Sassy Grass Green 440+6 coupe might just be your next prize.
