CAUGHT: Maserati’s New GranTurismo Is Wearing Alfa Romeo Giulia Disguise!

New Coupe Will Be On Giorgio EVO Platform...

The Maserati brand is in the process of reinventing itself. Starting with the launch of its new mid-engined 2022 Maserati MC20 super sportscar, a new portfolio of luxury performance vehicles is in development for the ‘trident’ brand. One of the most anticipated vehicles in that upcoming portfolio is the new GranTurismo Grand Tourer (GT) coupe.

The next-generation Maserati GranTurismo will be based on an evolved version of the Giorgio that currently underpins the award-winning Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio. It’s no surprise then, that these modified Giulia bodies are covering the brand’s newest GT car underpinnings. With its stretched front end, the GranTurismo will have its powertrains pushed far back over the front wheels as possible and creating a true front-mounted mid-engined GT car.

The new Giorgio EVO will be able to accommodate internal combustion engines (ICE), hybrid, and all-electric powertrains. So for the new GranTurismo, we know of two new powertrains that will be launched on the luxury GT car.

Under the hood, we expect the new Nettuno (or Neptune) engine that currently resides in the all-new MC20 super sportscar. The new power unit is a V90° architecture, with a 3.0-liter, 6-cylinder twin-turbo, and features a dry-sump (a classic solution on super sportscars). It delivers 630CV (or about 621 horsepower) at 7500rpm and 730 Nm (or 538 lb.-ft) of torque from 3000 rpm with a specific power output of 210CV/liter (or 207 horsepower/liter). It uses both direct and port injection, twin-spark plugs, and combustion pre-chamber in addition to the regular chamber.

The GranTurismo is also rumored to be the brand’s first vehicle featuring the new Folgore (or Lightning) in-house designed fully electric powertrain. According to our sources, it will feature a tri-motor layout with two motors in the rear and one motor in the front. Supposedly, the two rear motors will be able to have individual power and torque management allowing the GranTurismo to have active torque vectoring.

Maserati 5-Year Plan from 2018. (Maserati).

Maserati plans to have the GranTusimo in dealers sometime in 2022, with a GranCabrio (convertible) making its appearance soon after. We are hearing that the GranCabrio will feature a power soft top that will operate twice as fast as the last generation’s top.

We can’t wait to see the final product and expect to maybe see it later this year. We wouldn’t be surprised to see Maserati hold another event like they did when they unveiled the MC20, with the all-new Maserati Grecale being in attendance as well.

I have the opinion that Maserati is best positioned in product offering, with organization vision, execution and sales and marketing clarity, IMO already on the path in many markets, to being a very successful brand. This new GT is proof positive of the soundness of all these elements in the so called “reinvention” process, which I call rather a “refinement” process. I do hope, actually argue aggressively, that the fundamental engineering done to create this world class RWD super coupe migrates almost in entirety to Alfa Romeo and Dodge as the next generation, brand interpreted muscle coupes. Why reinvent the wheel when this modified and refined platform and its associated costs can be spread across the corporation to the benefit of more of the players? Specifically I speak to a Europen configured Giulia coupe and the next generation American muscle car configured Challenger. Indeed, it is a necessity, not a request. It is cost effective too. Oh yes, Charger and Chrysler get to use this gift too. Bullseye!!
In this collective thinking we have Maserati, currently doing well in a variety of areas globally, creating a foothold in its market more successfully currently than Alfa Romeo, with the potential to refine, if not reinvent itself with a ground breaking coupe. As a bonus, pay attention here, Maserati can do so for more than itself. Can sound business sense overcome brand hubris is the sticking question here. Let’s hope the process can be done on the hush-hush to keep intact brand integrity while spreading the wealth. We shall see. The plan has been laid out right here for consideration and common sense it does make, absolutely. I modestly argue again with conviction a way forward. Yes world, the coupe is not dead, long live two doors and zoom, zoom. Bullseye!!!
