It looks like the problem with thieves stealing vehicles from assembly plants around the Metro Detroit area continues. This time, six new Dodge Durango models were stolen from a holding lot located at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant (JNAP) in Detroit yesterday.
The incident happened at 3 a.m. when the thieves crashed through the security gate. Police have yet to confirm which models were stolen, but it sounds like most if not all were the 475 horsepower Durango SRT models. One of which struck a light pole before taking off.
This isn’t the first time this happened at JNAP. Last year, six brand-new 707 horsepower Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawks were stolen from the plant on Detroit’s east side.
Earlier this year, we reported that eight stolen Dodge Ram 1500s were stolen from the Warren Truck Assembly Plant in a similar fashion. Over a three day period six of those vehicles were recovered and one arrest was made.
Last month, the same lot where the Durangos were stolen another batch of vehicles were stolen. The holding lot which holds vehicles for distribution for many FCA plants had four Dodge Chargers taken from it. These vehicles were also taken around 3 a.m. and crashed through the same gate the Durangos did as well. Police are still investigating that incident.
FCA isn’t the only one who had brand new vehicles stolen from their assembly plants. A pair of criminals stole two of Mustang Shelby GT350s from the Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Flat Rock, Michigan last year. The pair crashed through a security gate and were spotted not to long after. One of the Mustangs was involved with a high speed police crash before getting away, while the other one managed to evade authorities completely.
FCA and local authorities are looking into the incident and both are conducting investigations. Detroit Police are asking for you to call (313) 596-5500 with any leads the public may have about the event.
