Today, we are checking out yet another 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona that is scheduled to go across the Mecum Kissimmee auction block. This particular model is very unique, due to its special-order paint color from the factory.
Looking at the broadcast sheet of this Daytona, this car is listed with code 99 for special-order paint. Painted in stunning Omaha Orange (also known as PPG 60436), this car is certainly going to catch attention as it was not a color normally available for the 1969 Dodge Charger. This car remains the only Daytona documented to be painted in the Omaha Orange color, out of the 503 units produced.
Any Charger R/T destined for the Daytona program being done this way was likely a big surprise, and it most certainly created frustrations at subcontractor Creative Industries, who needed to find an exact match in lacquer for the extra parts.
The car had the same owner from 1973 to 1999, when collector Tim Wellborn heard that the car was being stored in someone’s backyard. You can imagine his shock to see the special-order code on the VIN plate. Soon after he purchased the car, it underwent a two-year restoration effort by Roger Gibson. During the tare down on the Daytona, a quality-control sheet was discovered above the headliner stating the car, including wheels, was to be painted 60436, and the order number on this artifact matches the order number on the broadcast sheet.
Power comes from a 7.2-liter (440 cubic-inch) MAGNUM V8 mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. The powertrain combination means that the car automatically was updated with a Dana 60 Sure-Grip differential. The 440 MAGNUM produced an outstanding 375 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque, thanks to its four-barrel carburetor.
Highlighting the Omaha Orange exterior is a Black painted wing and Daytona stripe. The car features a Black interior with a center console, wood-knob Hurst shifter, headrest bucket seats, a 150 MPH speedometer, in-dash clock, Solid State AM radio, wood-grain trim, and a driver’s side remote mirror. In addition to the Daytona streamlining parts, this car now has the factory-correct, 15-inch, body-color wheels installed, complete with poverty hubcaps and new old stock (NOS) Goodyear Polyglas redline tires.
Featured on the cover of Muscle Car Review in September 2013, this car’s sale is accompanied by its original broadcast sheet, the one-off quality inspection sheet, a letter from the previous owner, and restoration receipts.
Scheduled to cross the auction block on Friday, January 13th, 2023, Mecum estimates that the car could bring $500,000 to $600,000.
