Jeep® Cancels Gladiator 4xe Plug-In Hybrid Plans

America's Adventure Brand Focusing On What Buyers Want

Jeep® has officially pulled the plug on its long-anticipated Gladiator 4xe plug-in hybrid (PHEV). The decision, revealed to dealers on September 19, marks another course correction as Stellantis continues to rethink the electrification roadmap set by former CEO Carlos Tavares.

This news comes after Stellantis confirmed the discontinuation of the fully electric Ram 1500 REV in favor of the range-extending Ram 1500 Ramcharger, which will now carry the REV name. While electrified vehicles aren’t disappearing completely—the Jeep Recon EV is still on track—the Gladiator 4xe will not be part of the lineup.

In a statement, Jeep emphasized the brand’s ongoing commitment to the Gladiator while acknowledging a pivot in direction. “The Jeep Gladiator carries its rugged styling and authentic design into 2026 while adding incredible new content straight from the factory. It will continue to serve as the industry’s only open-air pickup truck, combining legendary Jeep 4×4 capability with exceptional everyday versatility,” a Jeep spokesperson said.

The statement went further, addressing the reasoning behind the cancellation. “As customers’ propulsion preferences for battery-electric trucks continue to evolve, Stellantis is reassessing its product strategy and will no longer include an electrified Gladiator variant in the Jeep lineup,” the spokesperson added. “The Jeep brand has already begun reinvesting funding to ensure the long-term growth of the Jeep Gladiator and will introduce even more customer-requested factory features, customization, and additional powertrain options in the near future.”

That last part is particularly interesting. Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf recently hinted that a 6.4-liter (392 cubic-inch) HEMI® V8 could be on the horizon for the Gladiator—a move that would be a crowd-pleaser among traditional enthusiasts. By shifting focus back toward proven gasoline powertrains and customer-driven features, Jeep is clearly looking to rebuild sales momentum and capture lost market share.

For fans of the Gladiator, this development is bittersweet. The 4xe badge has been successful on models like the Wrangler, but Jeep seems to believe its pickup truck buyers aren’t asking for a plug-in option right now. Instead, the focus will be on expanding capability, customization, and performance.

The message is clear: Jeep isn’t abandoning innovation—it’s simply making sure the Gladiator’s future aligns with what buyers really want today.
